2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships
The 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships were the 39th edition of the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. The event took place from 25 to 30 September 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil under the auspices of International Canoe Federation (ICF). The competitions were held at the Deodoro Olympic Whitewater Stadium which had also hosted the canoe slalom events of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Brazil hosted the event for the third time after the 1997 championships in Três Coroas and the 2007 championships in Foz do Iguaçu. It was the first World Championships not to feature the discontinued men's C2 event. Russia and Argentina won their first ever medals at the Canoe Slalom World Championships. Luka Božič (born 9 January 1991) is a Slovenian slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2006. He won seven medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with two golds (C2: 2014, C1 team: 2022), a silver (C1 team: 2018) and four bronzes (C1: 2019, C2: 2009, C1 team: 2014, 2015). He also won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the European Championships. Dariusz Bogusław "Darek" Popiela (born 27 July 1985) is a Polish slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 1999. He represented Austria until 2002. Career Popiela won five medals in the K1 team event at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with two silvers (2013, 2018) and three bronzes (2006, 2019, 2023). He also won two golds, seven silvers and three bronzes at the European Championships, including a silver in the K1 team event at the 2023 European Games in Kraków. Joseph Clarke, (born 3 November 1992) is a British slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2009, specializing in the K1 (kayak) and KX1 (extreme kayak/kayak cross) events. He is the 2016 Olympic champion in the K1 event, a double World champion in the kayak cross discipline, and has won medals at World and European Championships. Early life Clarke was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He first tried canoeing during a trip with The Scout Association at the age of eight.
