2018 Bangladesh Election Violence
2018 Bangladesh election violence refers to a series of brutal attacks, mostly on opposition party candidates and clashes between ruling and opposition party men centering on the general election on December 30, 2018. According to UN human rights experts, from December 9 to 12 a total of 47 such incidents of violence were reported, in which eight people were killed and 560 were injured, mostly from the ruling party. On December 18 the major opposition party of the country, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), claimed that at least 4 party activists have been killed and 152 of 300 candidates have been attacked while campaigning. Moreover, 16 candidates from the alliance of opposition groups are in jail. The number of activists arrested by police after the declaration of the election schedule is around 21,000 according to the leaders of the Jatiya Oikya Front, the largest opposition alliance in the country. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. The Bangladesh Election Commission said it would investigate reported vote-rigging allegations from "across the country." The election saw the use of electronic voting machines for the first time. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir (born 26 January 1948) is a Bangladeshi politician. He has been the secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since 2016. He was a member of the parliament for Thakurgaon-1 constituency from 2001 to 2006. In that term, he was also appointed as the Minister of State in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture and later Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. Ruhul Quddus Talukder "Dulu" (born 7 September 1962) is a Bangladeshi politician, lawyer, former deputy minister, and former member of parliament representing the Natore-2 constituency. Shah Moazzem Hossain (known as SM Hossain; 10 January 1939 – 14 September 2022) was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and the last Deputy Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He was elected as the Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Rangpur-6 constituency as a Jatiya Party candidate in a by-election in September 1991 and served until November 1995. Abu Sayeed is a politician from Pabna district of Bangladesh, organizer of the War of Liberation, and former Minister of State for Information who was a Member of Parliament for the then Pabna 8 and Pabna-1 constituencies.
