Iceland
Iceland ( is, Ísland; ) is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Arctic Ocean. Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Iceland's capital and largest city is Reykjavík, which (along with its surrounding areas) is home to over 65% of the population. Iceland is the biggest part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above sea level, and its central volcanic plateau is erupting almost constantly. Eiður Svanberg Guðnason
Eiður Svanberg Guðnason (7 November 1939 – 30 January 2017) was an Icelandic politician and diplomat. Biography Eiður was born on 7 November 1939 in Reykjavík. He served as Ambassador of Iceland to Australia from 28 November 2003 when he replaced Ólafur Egilsson Ólafur Egilsson (1564 – 1 March 1639) was an Icelandic Lutheran minister. In 1627, he was abducted, along with his wife and two sons, by Barbary Pirates under the Ottoman Empire during their raid on Vestmannaeyjar. The raid is known in Ic .... Jórunn Viðar (7 December 1918 – 27 February 2017) was an Icelandic pianist and composer. Biography Jórunn Viðar was born and grew up in Reykjavík, Iceland. In 1937 she graduated from Reykjavík Grammar School, and the same year travelled to Germany to study for two years at the Music Academy in Berlin. She returned to Iceland and married Lárus Fjeldsted (1918–1985). In 1946 the family spent some time in New York City where she studied composition at the Juilliard School of Music; after they moved back to Iceland, Jórunn worked as a pianist and accompanist. She was awarded the Order of the Falcon, Knight's Cross class (''Riddarakross''), for accomplishments in music. Works Jórunn Viðar has written a number of compositions based on Icelandic folk songs. The president of Iceland ( is, Forseti Íslands) is the head of state of Iceland. The incumbent is Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson, who is now in his second term as president, elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir assumed Iceland's presidency on 1 August 1980, she made history as the first elected female head of state in the world. The president is elected to a four-year term by popular vote, is not term-limited, and has limited powers. Ólöf Nordal (3 December 1966 – 8 February 2017) was an Icelandic politician who was the Minister of the Interior of Iceland from 4 December 2014 to 11 January 2017. She died on 8 February 2017. She was a member of the Independence Party. Early life Ólöf graduated from Reykjavík Upper Secondary School in 1986. She received a law degree from the University of Iceland in 1994 and an MBA from Reykjavík University in 2002. Career Ólöf worked as a teacher, lawyer, and in the administration prior to entering politics. She served as a department head in the Ministry of Transport and Communications from 1996 through 1999.
