2017 World Junior Curling Championships
The 2017 World Junior Curling Championships (branded as the 2017 VoIP Defender World Junior Curling Championships for sponsorship reasons) was held from February 16 to 26 at the Gangneung Curling Centre in Gangneung, South Korea. The tournament has been designated as a test event for curling at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Gangneung
Gangneung () is a municipal city in the province of Gangwon-do, on the east coast of South Korea. It has a population of 213,658 (as of 2017).Gangneung City (2003)Population & Households. World Junior Curling Championships
The World Junior Curling Championships are an annual curling bonspiel featuring the world's best curlers who are 21 years old or younger. The competitions for both men and women occur at the same venue. The men's tournament has occurred since 1975 and the women's since 1988. Since curling became an Olympic sport in 1998, the World Junior Curling Championship of the year preceding the Olympic Games have been held at the site of the curling tournament for the upcoming Games. The event has its origins in the International Junior Masters Bonspiel which began in 1968 and was held annually at the East York Curling Club. By 1973, the tournament began being called the International Junior Curling Championship and the World Junior Curling Championship in 1974, before being officially sanctioned in 1975. Cheng Kuo (curler)
Zheng Guo (fl. third century BCE) was a Chinese hydraulic engineer who lived towards the end of the Warring States period. He is best known for designing the Zhengguo Canal, which was named after him. Life Zheng Guo was from the Han state. In the third century BCE, near the end of the Warring States period, the Qin state in western China was making aggressive advances towards the other six major states in the east. The Han state, which shared borders with the Qin state, heard that the Qin state liked to carry out large-scale construction works and projects, so they sent Zheng Guo to persuade the Qin state to build a canal connecting the Jing and Luo rivers to irrigate the Guanzhong plain and boost agricultural productivity. Wang Zhi Yu
Wang Zhiyu (; born August 24, 1996, in Harbin) is a Chinese curler. He currently plays second on the Chinese men's curling team skipped by Ma Xiuyue. Career As a junior curler, Wang threw last rocks for the Chinese junior men's team at the 2017 and 2018 World Junior Curling Championships, skipping the team in 2018. In 2017, Wang, skip Yuan Ming Jie, and front end Li Hong Bo and Kang Xin Long finished with a 2–7 record. In 2018, Wang led his team of Tian Jiafeng, Wang Xiangkun, and Zhang Zezhong to a 3–6 record. Nicholas Meister (born December 25, 1995) is a Canadian curler from Langley, British Columbia. He currently plays lead for the Brent Pierce rink. He is a former Canadian Junior Champion. Career Juniors After skipping his own team in juniors, Meister played lead for the Tyler Tardi junior rink from 2013 to 2017. As a member of the Tardi rink, Meister won the British Columbia men's junior championship in 2016 and 2017. The team represented the province at the 2016 and 2017 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. Sterling Middleton
Sterling Middleton (born December 8, 1998) is a Canadian curler, originally from Fort St. John, British Columbia. He is a two-time World Junior champion, three-time Canadian Junior Champion, and Youth Olympic gold medallist. Career Juniors Growing up in the Peace Region of British Columbia meant that Middleton was eligible to curl competitively out of B.C. and Alberta. Middleton curled for the Falher, Alberta based Dustin Turcotte rink for two seasons from 2013 to 2015. After seeing him at the 2013 B.C. High School Championship, Middleton was picked up to also play for the Tyler Tardi rink in 2014. The team went on to win the BC qualifier for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
