2017 Portuguese Local Elections
The Portuguese local elections of 2017 were held on October 1, 2017. The elections consisted of three separate elections in the 308 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the Municipal Chambers, whose winner was elected mayor, another election for the Municipal Assembly, as well an election for the lower-level Parish Assembly, whose winner was elected parish president. This last election was held in the more than 3,000 parishes around the country. The Socialist Party (PS) was the big winner of the elections consolidating their position as the largest local party in Portugal. The PS won 160 mayors, 10 more than in 2013, and more than 38% of the votes. The Socialists maintained control in cities like Lisbon, although here they lost their majority, Funchal and Coimbra, at the same time they gained some strong PSD bastions like Chaves or Mirandela. Municipalities Of Portugal
The municipality ( pt, município or ''concelho'') is the second-level administrative subdivision of Portugal, as defined by the 1976 Constitution. As a general rule, each municipality is further subdivided into parishes (''freguesias''); the municipalities in the north of the country usually have a higher number of parishes. Six municipalities are composed of only one parish, and Barcelos, with 61 parishes, has the most. Corvo is, by law, the only municipality with no parishes. Since the creation of a democratic local administration, in 1976, the Portuguese municipalities have been ruled by a system composed of an executive body (the municipal chamber) and a deliberative body (the municipal assembly). Mirandela
Mirandela () is a city and a municipality in northeastern Portugal. The city itself has a population of about 15,000. The population of the municipality in 2011 was 23,850, in an area of 658.96 km². LIVRE
LIVRE (, L), previously known as LIVRE/Tempo de Avançar (, L/TDA), is a green political party in Portugal founded in 2014. Its founding principles are ecology, universalism, freedom, equity, solidarity, socialism and Europeanism. Its symbol is a poppy. It was legalised by the Portuguese Constitutional Court on 20 March 2014. On 20 May 2015, it officially changed its name LIVRE to LIVRE/Tempo de Avançar, with L/TDA as its abbreviation. It switched back to its original name a few years later. Rui Moreira (politician)
Rui de Carvalho de Araújo Moreira (born 8 August 1956) is a Portuguese businessman and politician, currently serving as Mayor of Porto since 2013. While officially an independent, he has been supported by the CDS – People's Party since 2013 and the Liberal Initiative (Portugal), Liberal Initiative since 2021. Biography Moreira was born in Porto. One of his great-grandfathers was Adolfo Höfle, a wealthy German migrant and employer of João Augusto Ferreira de Almeida, the last man executed by Portugal in 1917. Maria de Assunção de Oliveira Cristas Machado da Graça (born 28 September 1974) is a Portuguese lawyer, professor and politician. She was the President of the CDS – People's Party from 2016 to 2020. Barreiro, Portugal
Barreiro () is a city and a municipality in Setúbal District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 78,764, in an area of 36.39 km2. Barreiro has a view of the city of Lisbon from Avenida da Praia and a riverside area called Alburrica. The mayor since 2017 has been Frederico Rosa, elected by the Socialist Party.
