The 2017 Philadelphia Phillies season was the 135th season in the history of the franchise, and its 14th season at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies opened the season against the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park on April 3 and finished the season on October 1 against the New York Mets in Philadelphia. They were coached by Pete Mackanin in his third year as manager of the Phillies. On September 17, 2017, the Phillies were mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. The National League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. Along with the American League Central it is one of two divisions to have every member win at least one World Series title. The division was created when the National League (along with the American League) added two expansion teams and divided into two divisions, East and West effective for the 1969 season. The National League's geographical alignment was rather peculiar as its partitioning was really more north and south instead of east and west. Darnell Thomas Sweeney (born February 1, 1991) is an American professional baseball utility player who is currently a free agent. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. Darin Cortland Ruf (born July 28, 1986) is an American professional baseball first baseman, outfielder, and designated hitter for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB). Ruf was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and played at Westside High School. Patrick John Neshek (pronounced NEE-shehk; born September 4, 1980), is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies. The Twins selected him in the sixth round of the 2002 MLB draft, out of Butler University. The 2017 New York Mets season was the franchise's 56th season and the team's ninth season at Citi Field.
