2017 Ontario Scotties Tournament Of Hearts
The 2017 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the provincial women's curling championship for Southern Ontario, was held January 30 to February 5 at the Cobourg Community Centre in Cobourg, Ontario. The winning Rachel Homan rink represented Ontario at the 2017 Scotties Tournament of Hearts on home ice in St. Catharines, Ontario. Homan went on to win her third Scotties Tournament of Hearts, defeating Manitoba's Michelle Englot in the final. The event was held in conjunction with the 2017 Ontario Tankard, southern Ontario's men's provincial championship which was held at the same time. The events are usually held separately. The opening ceremonies were scheduled for January 30. The Rachel Homan rink, who were ranked #1 on the World Curling Tour's Order of Merit ranking won the event, after having been upset in the 2016 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts by club-mates Jenn Hanna and her rink. Cobourg, Ontario
Cobourg ( ) is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in Southern Ontario east of Toronto and east of Oshawa. It is the largest town in and seat of Northumberland County. Michelle Englot
Michelle Englot (born January 22, 1964 in Montmartre, Saskatchewan; formerly known as Michelle Ridgway and Michelle Schneider); is a Canadian curler from Regina, Saskatchewan. She currently plays second on Team Brooklyn Stevenson. She is a nine-time provincial champion skip. Career Englot started curling at age twelve, and represented Saskatchewan at the 1983 Canada Winter Games. Englot won her first Saskatchewan Scott Tournament of Hearts provincial championship in 1988, she defeated Kathy Fahlman 10–0 in the final. This qualified Englot for her first Tournament of Hearts national championship. At the 1988 Scott Tournament of Hearts, she finished with a 9–2 record, but lost in the semi-final to Heather Houston of Ontario. Lori Eddy
Lori Christine Eddy (born August 26, 1971, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian curler from Dundas, Ontario. Career Eddy played third on the Alison Goring rink that represented Ontario at the 1997 Scott Tournament of Hearts, Canada's national women's curling championship. The team made it to the finals of the event, where they lost to Saskatchewan's Sandra Schmirler. Later that year, the team played in the 1997 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, but finished tied for eighth place. Over the next few years, Eddy would play for a number of different skips in Ontario including Janet Brown (later McGhee), Marilyn Bodogh, Jacqueline Harrison, Allison Flaxey, Cathy Auld and Julie Hastings. 2014 Ontario Scotties Tournament Of Hearts
The 2014 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the provincial women's curling championship for Ontario, was held from January 6 to 12 at the Soo Curlers Association in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The winning team represented Ontario at the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal. The event marked the final tournament to include teams from Northern Ontario, which began to have its own entry into the Scotties beginning in 2015. Qualification Process Ten teams qualify for the provincial tournament through several methods. Four teams qualified from Northern Ontario, two teams qualified from Regions 1 and 2, two teams qualified from regions 3 and 4 and two teams qualified from the Challenge Round. The defending champion Rachel Homan did not need to participate in the qualification process, as she won the 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and therefore represented Team Canada at the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. 2016 WFG Masters
The 2016 The Masters Grand Slam of Curling, WFG Masters was a curling bonspiel held from October 25 to 30, at the Pason Centennial Arena in Okotoks, Alberta. This was the first Grand Slam (curling), Grand Slam of the 2016–17 curling season. On the men's side, the Niklas Edin rink from Karlstad, Sweden won their first Grand Slam event, and also became the first non-Canadian team to win a men's Grand Slam event. Edin defeated the defending Olympic champion, Brad Jacobs (curler), Brad Jacobs rink from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The women's final was a battle of Ontario with Caledon, Ontario, Caledon's Allison Flaxey upsetting the World #1 Rachel Homan rink from Ottawa to win her first ever Grand Slam event. Sherry Middaugh
Sherry L. Middaugh (née Hamel, born October 11, 1966 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian curler from Victoria Harbour, Ontario. Before marrying world champion curler Wayne Middaugh, she was known as Sherry Scheirich. She is a five-time Ontario champion and a one-time Saskatchewan curling champion. She is currently the coach of Team Tracy Fleury. Career Middaugh, originally from Saskatchewan, won the 1986 Saskatchewan Junior Women's Championship. She represented Saskatchewan at the 1986 Canadian Junior Women's Curling Championship, where she tied for fourth with a 6–4 record. Her lone Saskatchewan Hearts victory came in 1996, when she defeated Sandra Peterson (Schmirler) in the provincial final, 8–5. Megan Balsdon
Megan Balsdon (born May 10, 1982 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian curler. She currently plays third on Team Hollie Duncan. Career In 1998, Balsdon won the Ontario Bantam Mixed championships playing third for skip Bobby Reid. In 2001, she won the Pepsi Ontario Junior Curling Championships playing third for Carrie Lindner. The team represented Ontario at the 2001 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, finishing with an 8-4 round robin record. The team would place third after losing to Prince Edward Island's Suzanne Gaudet in the semifinal game. After juniors, Balsdon joined the Kelly Cochrane rink, playing third for Cochrane until 2006. Balsdon then re-united with Lindner as her third, winning the 2006 Shorty Jenkins Classic, their first World Curling Tour event together. Julie Tippin
Julie Tippin (born August 16, 1983 in Pointe-Claire, Quebec as Julie Lynne Reddick) is a Canadian curler from Owen Sound, Ontario. Tippin is a three-time provincial junior champion, and a Canadian mixed champion. Career Tippin attended high school in Beaconsfield, Quebec where she was on her high school curling team. Tippin began her successful curling career by winning the 1999 Ontario provincial junior championships. At the 1999 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Tippin skipped Ontario to an 8-4 record, just out of the playoffs. Tippin was still eligible for Bantams that year, and she won the 1999 Bantam Girls provincial championship as well. Tippin won another provincial junior championship in 2000 to qualify her for the 2000 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. Heather Heggestad
Heather Heggestad (previously Heather Marshall and Heather Graham) is a Canadian curler from Barrie, Ontario. She currently skips a team on the World Curling Tour. Heggestad is originally from Gore Bay, Ontario. Heggestad won two straight provincial mixed curling, mixed championships playing third for her then-boyfriend Cory Heggestad (2013 and 2014 events) and won the 2013 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship as a member of Team Ontario. She also played on the Ontario team at the 2014 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, finishing second. Cathy Auld
Catherine "Cathy" Auld (born December 3, 1971) is a Canadian curler from Toronto. She currently skips her own team out of Thornhill, Ontario. Career Auld was a longtime member of the Alison Goring rink. Auld played third for the team until 2006 when she was promoted to last rock thrower when Goring moved to throwing lead rocks. The team found success together with this lineup modification. At the 2007 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts, they finished the round robin with a 7-2 record. This was enough to secure a playoff spot and they faced Sherry Middaugh in the 3-4 game. However, they lost the game. The team qualified for the 2008 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts, where they completed the round robin with a 6-3 record. Allison Flaxey
Allison "Alli" Flaxey ( Nimik; born February 13, 1985) is a Canadian curler from Caledon, Ontario. She currently plays third on Team Carly Howard. She is a former Canadian Mixed champion, and World Mixed Doubles bronze medallist. Career Flaxey is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a junior, she won the Manitoba Junior championships at the age of 15 in 2001 with teammates Kristin Loder, Lindsay Titheridge and Elisabeth Peters. The team finished with a 4–8 record at the 2001 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. Flaxey began curling competitively playing second for Shauna Streich. As a resident of Manitoba, she won the 2009 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship (held in Autumn 2008), playing third for Sean Grassie. CTRS Standings
The Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) is a point system used by Curling Canada to rank men's and women's curling teams across Canada. They are determined through points earned in various curling bonspiels held worldwide throughout the season. CTRS points are the basis of the World Curling Tour's Order of Merit and are also used as criteria in identifying teams that qualify for the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials. Beginning in 2018, the top two CTRS teams that do not otherwise qualify for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts or Tim Hortons Brier will earn the right to compete in a play-in game for a wildcard berth in those tournaments.
