2017 Nunavut General Election
The 2017 Nunavut general election was held on October 30, 2017 to return the members of the 5th Nunavut Legislature. The fifth general election held since the creation of the territory in 1999, it was the first election held under Nunavut's new fixed election dates law, which requires elections to be held no more than four years after the prior election. Unlike most federal or provincial elections in Canada, elections to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut are conducted on a non-partisan consensus government model, in which all candidates run as independents rather than being nominated by political parties. The premier and executive council are then selected internally by the MLAs at the first special sitting of the legislature. Legislative Assembly Of Nunavut
The Legislative Assembly of Nunavut is the legislative assembly for the Canadian territory of Nunavut. The seat of the Assembly is the Legislative Building of Nunavut in Iqaluit. Prior to the creation of Nunavut as a Canadian territory on April 1, 1999, the 1999 Nunavut general election was held on February 15 to determine the 1st Nunavut Legislature. The Legislative Assembly was opened by Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on October 7, 2002, during her Golden Jubilee tour of Canada. In her speech the Queen stated: "I am proud to be the first member of the Canadian Royal Family to be greeted in Canada's newest territory." Mila Adjukak Kamingoak
Mila Adjukak Kamingoak is a Canadians, Canadian politician, who represents the electoral district of Kugluktuk (electoral district), Kugluktuk in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut as of October 30, 2017. Kamingoak was the only candidate to register in her district by the close on September 29 of nominations for the 2017 Nunavut general election, 2017 general election, and was thus acclamation, acclaimed directly to office. David Joanasie
David Joanasie (born June 22, 1983) is a Canadian Inuk politician from Cape Dorset, Nunavut. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2013 election. He represents the electoral district of South Baffin. Education David attended school at Cape Dorset and learned Inuktitut up until third grade. He graduated from Peter Pitseolak High School in 2001, and was interested in mathematics. Pat Angnakak
Pat Angnakak is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2013 election and reelected in 2017. She represented the electoral district of Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu until 2021; she resigned her seat in the legislature in August 2021 in order to run as a Liberal Party of Canada candidate in the 2021 Canadian federal election, but was defeated by Lori Idlout of the New Democratic Party. Q. Cathy Towtongie is a Canadian Inuk politician from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. She was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2017 general election to represent the electoral district of Rankin Inlet North-Chesterfield Inlet. He was elected premier on June 14, 2018 by the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, after his predecessor Paul Quassa lost a no-confidence vote. Iqaluit
Iqaluit ( ; , ; ) is the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, its largest community, and its only city.
