2017 Indonesian Local Elections
Local elections were held in Indonesia on 15 February 2017, with a single 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, run-off for Jakarta on 19 April 2017. The series of elections was the second time local elections were held simultaneously across the country after the 2015 Indonesian local elections, 2015 local elections. In total, the election contested 7 gubernatorial, 18 mayoral and 76 regent seats with 41 million eligible voters and 337 candidate pairs. Like other local elections in Indonesia (except for Jakarta), the elections followed a simple majority, first-past-the-post system where the candidates with the most votes automatically wins the seat even if they have less than 50% of the votes. Zaini Abdullah
Zaini Abdullah (born 24 April 1940) is an Indonesian politician and former separatist activist of the Free Aceh Movement (or GAM, ''Gerakan Aceh Merdeka'') in Indonesia who was elected as the governor of the province of Aceh in the 2012 election for a five-year period from 2012 to 2017. West Sulawesi
West Sulawesi ( id, Sulawesi Barat) is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the western side of Sulawesi island. It covers an area of 16,787.18 km2, and its capital is Mamuju. The 2010 Census recorded a population of 1,158,651, while that in 2020 recorded 1,419,228. The province was established in 2004, having been split off from South Sulawesi. Rusli Habibie
Rusli Habibie is an Indonesian politician and former governor of Gorontalo. Habibie requested that if schoolteachers smoke on school grounds, then people should send him photos of the offender via WhatsApp so he can reassign them to schools in more remote areas of the province as punishment. 2017 Banten Gubernatorial Election
A gubernatorial election was held on 15 February 2017 to elect the governor of Banten province for the five-year term between 2017 and 2022. The election was held simultaneously with other provincial and local elections across the country as part of the 2017 local elections. It pitted incumbent Rano Karno against People's Representative Council member and former mayor of Tangerang Wahidin Halim. Wahidin, supported by a coalition of 6 parliamentary parties, secured a landslide victory in his former constituency at Tangerang, and defeated Rano with a margin of 90,000 votes despite losing in 6 of the other 7 regencies and cities. Wahidin Halim
Wahidin Halim (born 14 August 1954) is an Indonesian politician who is the formerly Governor of Banten, having held that position since 2017 to 2022. Before being elected to the office, Halim had spent two years as a legislator and ten years as the mayor of Tangerang. Halim was born in Tangerang and completed his higher education in the University of Indonesia.
