2017 ITTF Men's World Cup
The 2017 ITTF Men's World Cup was a table tennis competition held in Liège, Belgium, from 20 to 22 October 2017. It was the 38th edition of the ITTF-sanctioned event, and the fourth time that it had been staged in Belgium. In the final, Germany's Dimitrij Ovtcharov defeated fellow German Timo Boll, 4–2, to win his first World Cup title. Qualification The following list of players was confirmed on 25 September 2017, based on the qualification system set by the ITTF. Competition format The tournament consisted of two stages: a preliminary group stage and a knockout stage. The players seeded 9 to 20 were drawn into four groups, with three players in each group. The top two players from each group then joined the top eight seeded players in the second stage of the competition, which consisted of a knockout draw. Country Hall Liège (formerly Country Hall du Sart Tilman) is a multi-purpose arena in Liège, Belgium. The arena has 5,600 seats in its sport configuration and 7,200 in the concert configuration. Pan American Table Tennis Cup
The Pan American Table Tennis Cup is an annual table tennis competition held in the Americas since 2017. It consists of men's and women's singles events. Only 16 invited players and no more than 2 players per association are allowed to participate in each event. Since its inception, it is recognised as the qualification event for the Table Tennis World Cup. The competitions are organized as a joint effort of the Latin American Table Tennis Union and the Northern American Table Tennis Union. Chuang Chih-yuan
Chuang Chih-yuan (; born 2 April 1981) is a Taiwanese table tennis player. He won the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals in 2002 and doubles title at the 2013 World Table Tennis Championships. He participated in the Summer Olympics five times, making the most appearances at Olympic Games among Taiwanese athletes. Career in table tennis Chuang's parents were both table tennis players in Taiwan. His father was a national doubles champion, and his mother Lee Kuei-mei was a member of the national team. After the end of Lee's career as a player, her son, Chih-yuan, became one of her prodigies in table tennis. Chuang started competing in 1989, at the age of eight. Omar Assar (born 22 July 1991 in Desouk) is an Egyptian table tennis player. He won silver in singles and gold in team play at the 2011 Arab Games in Doha. Kou Lei ( uk, Коу Лей; born November 20, 1987 in Beijing) is a Ukrainian table tennis player of Chinese origin. Career As of April 2017, Kou is ranked no. 20 in the world by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Kou is also right-handed, and uses the offensive, shakehand grip. Jun Mizutani
is a retired Japanese table tennis player. He became the youngest Japanese national champion at the age of 17. His consecutive singles titles at the national championships from 2007 to 2011 made him the first man to win the event five times in a row. After defeating Vladimir Samsonov for the bronze medal by 4–1 in the 2016 Rio Olympics, he finally seized his first singles medal in the three main international tournaments. It was also the first Olympic table tennis singles medal of his country. Alexander Igorevich Shibaev (russian: Александр Игоревич Шибаев; born 9 September 1990 in Yaroslavl) is a Russian table tennis player. The Europe Top 16, also known as the Europe Top 16 Cup and previously known as the Europe Top 12, is a table tennis tournament organised annually by the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU), featuring the highest-ranked players in Europe.
