2017 Down Senior Football Championship
The 2017 Down Senior Football Championship was the 109th official edition of Down GAA's premier gaelic football tournament for senior clubs in County Down. 16 teams compete with the winner representing Down in the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship. The tournament operated a double elimination format for the opening two rounds of the championship, with the winners and early round losers rejoining at the quarter final stage. Kilcoo Owen Roe's were the defending champions after they defeated Clonduff 3-11 to 0-9 in the 2016 final. On 1 October 2017 they successfully defended their title to claim a "6 in a row" of Down S.F.C. titles when defeating Burren 0-13 to 0-11. The final was broadcast live on TG4. An Ríocht return to the senior grade after claiming the Down I.F.C. title in 2016. Down Senior Football Championship
The Down Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by top-tier Down GAA clubs. The Down County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1903. Kilcoo are the title holders (2022) defeating Warrenpoint in the Final. History Since the turn of the Millennium, the competition and Down football has largely been dominated by the "Big Three", with 21 of the 23 titles being shared by Kilcoo (11 titles), Mayobridge (7) and Burren (St Mary's) (3). Clonduff in 2000 and Bryansford in 2003 are the only other 2 teams to win a senior championship this century. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Frank O'Hare Cup. Páirc Esler
Páirc Esler ( , ; also ga, Páirc an Iúir ) is a GAA stadium in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is the home of the Down Gaelic football and hurling teams and the Newry Shamrocks GAA club. The ground has a capacity of about 20,000. History The ground was named after Fr. (later Archdeacon) Hugh Esler (d. 1983), a Catholic priest and Ballynahinch native credited with reinvigorating interest in Gaelic football in Newry in the 1930s–50s, and with securing the grounds that was to later become Páirc Esler. Renovation The ground has undergone major redevelopment work, with new stands, floodlights, new pitch all added in 2006–2007. From 1999 to 2004 no senior intercounty championship matches were played at the venue. Clonduff GAC
Clonduff GAC is a Gaelic Athletic Association club, based in Hilltown County Down, Northern Ireland. It represents the 2 areas that make up the Clonduff parish, namely Hilltown and Cabra. History Press reports show the history of Gaelic football in Clonduff reaching as far back as 1887 when the parish sported two teams: the Hilltown Amateurs and The Red Hands. Gaelic games flourished for a few years but then subsided and it was not until 1910 that the parish again fielded a Gaelic team. During the next ten years the parish fielded teams at Junior and Senior level under names such as The Emeralds, The Harps and The Sarsfields. 1920 can be identified as the founding year of the modern Clonduff Shamrocks. Bredagh GAC
Bredagh GAC is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in County Down, Northern Ireland. It fields teams at all levels from U8 to Senior in Men's and Ladies Gaelic football, Hurling and Camogie. It had its previous pitch, Bredagh Park, taken off them in December 1998 but moved next door to Cherryvale Playing Fields, owned by the Belfast City Council. Bredagh is one of the few clubs in Down without a pitch to call its own but it is a flourishing and resurgent club benefiting from both a changing demographic in the Ballynafeigh area and from solid work at increased training at underage levels. In 2006, the footballers won the Down Junior Football Championship and the Hurlers won Division 3 of the Ulster Club Hurling League. Castlewellan GAC (also known as St Malachy's GAC, or in Irish, CLG Naomh Maolmhoig Caisleán a' Mhuilinn) is a Gaelic Athletic Association Club in Castlewellan, County Down, Northern Ireland. An Ríocht GAC is a GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) Club based in County Down, Northern Ireland. The club provides teams from underage level to adult level in both Gaelic football and camogie. Russell Gaelic Union, Downpatrick is a Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football club based in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. History The first Gaelic Athletic Association club in Downpatrick was founded in 1896, ''Clan Na Gael'', mostly a hurling team. Gaelic football began to be popular in the 1910s. The games were outlawed during the Irish War of Independence (1918–22), but teams were refounded in 1924 and the ''St Patrick'' club affiliated in 1926. Downpatrick won their first Down Senior Football Championship in 1935. In 1938–39 they moved to Leatham's field at Ballymote and renamed themselves ''The Thomas Russell Club'', after Thomas Russell (1767–1803), executed at Downpatrick for his role in the Irish rebellion of 1803. Longstone GAC
Longstone GAC is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Annalong, County Down, Northern Ireland. Set at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in the Lower Mourne parish, the club caters for Gaelic Football, Camogie, and more recently Ladies' Gaelic Football at underage level. History Beginning Although there was a Longstone team for a few years in the 1930s, the present Club was started in 1945. A collection was held at a dance and sufficient money was raised to purchase a football and hire a field from July to October. This field was on the Oldtown Lane and was owned by Joe McKibben. After a number of practice matches among themselves and with the neighbouring 'Clinchers' from Brackney it was decided to hold a meeting and form a committee. Mayobridge GAA
Mayobridge Gaelic Athletic Association, also called Mayobridge Gaelic Athletic Club or Saint Patrick's Gaelic Athletic Social Club, is a Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football club based in Mayobridge, County Down, Northern Ireland. History The club was founded in 1888 as ''Saint Patrick's Mayobridge'' and is the oldest in County Down. The minutes of the Central Council of the GAA record that on 30 April 1888, an application for affiliation was received from St Patrick's Mayobridge County Down. The acceptance of that application makes the club the oldest registered GAA club in the county. Mayobridge won the county title in 1918 and 1919. The youth club and later club grounds were opened in 1978. Mayobridge enjoyed a golden age around the turn of the millennium, winning eight senior county titles in ten years (1999 to 2008) and reaching the final of the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship twice, in 2001 and 2004. Warrenpoint GAA
St Peter's GAA ( ga, Cumann Pheadair Naofa) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Warrenpoint, County Down, Northern Ireland. Foundation The GAA in Warrenpoint pre-dates St Peter's by a considerable span of years for it was in 1888 that the original seed was sown with the name of John Martin. The club colours were black and amber strips. Being adopted on a proposal by John Carr and seconded by Thomas Caulifield the Club maintained the name until the mid-1920s until it fell on hard times. In 1931, it revived but because Glenn had registered a new club, John Martin some months before, the name of St Peter's was chosen and blue and white were chosen as the club colours. It is worth noting that the John Martin's of 1888 won the first competition held in Down by beating Mayobridge at Edenmore. The Down County Board ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae An Dún) or Down GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland, and is responsible for the administration of Gaelic games in County Down, Northern Ireland. The County Board is responsible for preparing the Down county teams in the various Gaelic sporting codes; football, hurling, camogie and handball. The county football team was the second from the province of Ulster to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Cavan, and also the first team from Northern Ireland to win the Sam Maguire Cup since partition, doing so in 1960.
