The 2017 season is the 122nd year in the club's history, the 106th season in Clube de Regatas do Flamengo's football existence, and their 47th in the Brazilian Série A, having never been relegated from the top division. After finishing 2016 Brazilian Série A in 3rd place Flamengo earned a spot to play CONMEBOL Libertadores Bridgestone 2017, returning to the South America top club competition since last played in 2014. Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (; English: ''Flamengo Rowing Club''), more commonly referred to as simply Flamengo, is a Brazilian sports club based in Rio de Janeiro, in the neighborhood of Gávea, best known for their professional football team that plays in Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, as well as Campeonato Carioca. José Carlos Nepomuceno Mozer (born 19 September 1960) is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a central defender, and is a manager. In his career, he was mainly associated with Benfica in Portugal, which he represented in two separate spells. He also spent three years with French club Marseille. The 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A was the 60th season of the Série A, the top level of professional football in Brazil, and the 13th edition in a double round-robin since its establishment in 2003.
