2017 Chilean Presidential Primaries
The Chilean presidential primaries of 2017 were held in Chile on Sunday 2 July 2017. It was the first election in the country's history in which Chileans were permitted to vote from abroad. According to the law, primaries are voluntary, but its results are binding. Two political coalitions decided to participate: Former president Sebastián Piñera won the Chile Vamos primary with 58% of the vote, while radio and television journalist Beatriz Sánchez became the Broad Front nominee with nearly 68%. The governing Nueva Mayoría coalition decided not to participate. The presidential election was held on Sunday 19 November 2017. Independent Regionalist Party
The Independent Regionalist Party ( es, Partido Regionalista Independiente, PRI) was a centrist political party in Chile. The party was regionalist ideologically but had a nationwide presence. It was intended to be an alternative to the dominant coalitions in the Chilean electoral system, the New Majority and the Alliance. It was formed by the merger of the National Alliance of Independents (ANI) and the Regionalist Action Party of Chile (PAR) on 4 July 2006. In 2008, a group of former members of the Christian Democratic Party joined, earning the name "''Los Colorines''" (the Redheads), referring to the hair color of their leader, Adolfo Zaldívar. The party did not support any candidate in the 2009-10 presidential election. Democratic Revolution
Democratic Revolution () is a Chilean centre-left to left-wing political party, founded in 2012 by some of the leaders of the 2011 Chilean student protests, most notably the current Deputy Giorgio Jackson, who is also the most popular public figure of the party. Their principles are based on advocating for participative democracy and the overcoming of neoliberalism in Chile. History The movement was founded on January 7, 2012, adding up to more than 4000 supporters in the first week. They presented three candidates for the 2013 Chilean parliamentary election, winning one seat in the Chamber of Deputies, the former student leader Giorgio Jackson. Christian Left
The Christian left is a range of left-wing Christian political and social movements that largely embrace social justice principles and uphold a social doctrine or social gospel. Pirate Party is a label adopted by political parties around the world. Equality Party (Chile)
The Equality Party ( es, Partido Igualdad) was a left-wing political party in Chile. It was founded in 2009 by various social movements of workers, students, mortgage borrowers, townspeople and human rights organizations, among other actors. Its first president was former communist councilor of Peñalolen, Lautaro Guanca. Legally registered in 2012, it first appeared in the municipal elections of that year. Reaching 0.81% of the vote, it got the election of one councilor. For the 2013 elections, the party proclaimed Roxana Miranda as its presidential candidate. The party joined the Broad Front and supported Beatriz Sánchez for President in 2017, winning a seat in the lower house. The party was dissolved in February 2022 because it did not receive at least 5% of the votes in the 2021 parliamentary elections to maintain its legality. Alberto Miguel Espina Otero (born 4 December 1956) is a Chilean lawyer and politician. He was Minister of Defense in the second government of the President Sebastián Piñera (2018–2022). Biography He is the son of Alberto Espina Barros and María Eliana Otero Lathrop (now deceased). Also Espina has three brothers: a doctor, another Minister of the Court of Appeals and another sister. Likewise, he is the nephew of Miguel Otero Lathrop, senator of Renovación Nacional ―RN; same party of Espina― for the 1990–1998 period. He attended at The Grange School graduating from there in 1974. Joaquín Lavín
Joaquín José Lavín Infante (born 23 October 1953) is a Chilean politician of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) party and former mayor of Las Condes, in the northeastern zone of Santiago. Formerly Lavín has also been mayor of Santiago, Minister of Education and Minister of Social Development. He ran for president twice in 1999 and 2005, losing both times.
