The 2016–17 season was Sunderland A.F.C., Sunderland's 138th season in existence, and their tenth consecutive season in the Premier League. Along with competing in the Premier League, the club also participated in the 2016–17 FA Cup, FA Cup and 2016–17 EFL Cup, EFL Cup. The season covered the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017. Sunderland () is a port city in Tyne and Wear, England. It is the City of Sunderland's administrative centre and in the Historic counties of England, historic county of County of Durham, Durham. The city is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is on the River Wear's mouth to the North Sea. The river also flows through Durham, England, Durham roughly south-west of Sunderland City Centre. It is the only other city in the county and the second largest settlement in the North East England, North East after Newcastle upon Tyne. Locals from the city are sometimes known as Mackems. The term originated as recently as the early 1980s; its use and acceptance by residents, particularly among the older generations, is not universal. Bryan Josué Oviedo Jiménez (born 18 February 1990) is a Costa Rican professional footballer who plays as a left-back or left midfielder for Real Salt Lake and the Costa Rica national team. Billy Jones (born 24 March 1987) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-back. Jones started his career at Crewe Alexandra and made his professional debut in October 2003 in a 3–0 win over Derby County.
