2016–17 Primeira Liga
The 2016–17 Primeira Liga (also known as Liga NOS for sponsorship reasons) was the 83rd season of the Primeira Liga, the top Portuguese professional league for association football clubs. Benfica successfully defended their title, winning the league for a fourth consecutive season and record 36th time. Teams For the third consecutive season, the league was contested by a total of 18 teams, which included the best 16 sides from the 2015–16 season and two promoted from the 2015–16 LigaPro. Porto B won the 2015–16 LigaPro title on 8 May 2016, but as the reserve team of Primeira Liga side Porto they were ineligible for promotion, which meant that the third-placed team would be promoted instead. Primeira Liga
The Primeira Liga (; English: Premier League, also written as Liga Portugal 1), also known as Liga Portugal Bwin for sponsorship reasons, is the top level of the Portuguese football league system. Organised and supervised by the Liga Portugal, it is contested by 18 teams since the 2014–15 season, with the three lowest placed teams relegated to the Liga Portugal 2 and replaced by the top-three non-reserve teams from this division. Founded in 1934 as Campeonato da Liga da Primeira Divisão, it was named Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão from 1938 until 1999, when it was changed to its current naming. Over 70 teams have competed in the Primeira Liga, but only five have been crowned champions. The 1998–99 Primeira Divisão was the Primeira Liga#Primeira Liga all-time ranking, 65th edition of top flight of Portuguese football. It started on 23 August 1998 with a match between G.D. The Estádio da Luz (), officially named Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, is a multi-purpose stadium located in Lisbon, Portugal. It is used mostly for association football matches, hosting the home games of Portuguese club S.L. Benfica, its owner. Opened on 25 October 2003 with an exhibition match between Benfica and Uruguayan club Nacional, it replaced the original Estádio da Luz, which had 120,000 seats. The Estádio do Restelo is a multi-purpose stadium in Lisbon, Portugal. The stadium has a capacity of 19,856 people and was built in 1956, in an old stone quarry. It is situated behind the Jerónimos Monastery in the Lisbon parish of Belém.
