2016–17 Liga FPD
The 2015–16 Costa Rican FPD is the 96th season of the Costa Rican top-flight football league. It is divided in two championships: the Invierno and Verano seasons. Format The season format was changed from previous years. The season will still be split into two tournaments, the Invierno and Verano. Also, each tournament's regular stage will still consist of a double-round robin. However, the top four teams from the regular stage will advance to a "quadrangular" double-round robin instead of a play-off stage. If the team with the most points in regular stage finishes with the most points in the quadrangular, they will automatically win the tournament. Costa Rican Primera División
The Primera División of Costa Rica, commonly known as Fútbol de Primera División (FPD), and Liga Promerica for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional association football division in Costa Rica. It is administered by the Unión de Clubes de Fútbol de la Primera División (UNAFUT). The league consists of 12 teams, with the last-placed team relegated to the Liga de Ascenso. The league was founded in 1921, with Herediano crowned as the first champions. Saprissa is the most successful club having won the championship a record 37 times. Together with Alajuelense (30 titles) and Herediano (29 titles), they have dominated the league. Competition format The Liga FPD features a format in which two separate tournaments are held over the course of one particular season. Cartago, Costa Rica
Cartago () is the head city of Cartago canton of the Cartago Province, and is composed of the Oriental and Occidental districts as stated in the administrative divisions of Costa Rica. It was the capital of Costa Rica from 1574 to 1824. History Founded in 1563 by Juan Vasquez de Coronado, it was the first successful establishment in Costa Rica. Estadio Ebal Rodriguez is a multi-use stadium in Guápiles, Costa Rica. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Santos de Guápiles. The stadium holds 3,000 people. Estadio Municipal Pérez Zeledón
Estadio Municipal Pérez Zeledón is a multi-use stadium in Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of the Costa Rican FPD teams Municipal Pérez Zeledón and AS Puma Generaleña. Liberia, Costa Rica
Liberia () is a district and the largest city in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica, located northwest of the national capital, San José, in the canton with the same name, of which it is the head city or capital.
