2016 V8 Supercar Season
The 2016 V8 Supercar season was the twentieth and final season in which V8 Supercars have contested the premier Australian touring car series. It was the 57th season of touring car racing in Australia since the first runnings of the Australian Touring Car Championship, now known as the International V8 Supercars Championship, and the fore-runner of the present day Bathurst 1000, the Armstrong 500. The season began on 3 March at the Adelaide Street Circuit and finished on 27 November at the Homebush Street Circuit. 2016 featured the twentieth V8 Supercar Championship, consisting of 29 races at 14 events covering all six states and the Northern Territory of Australia as well an event in New Zealand. Originally the Supercars were going to make their first trip to Kuala Lumpur, but the event had to be cancelled due to certain logistical failures on the part of the promoters in Malaysia. The Supercars Championship is a touring car racing category in Australia, running as an International Series under Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) regulations, governing the sport. Supercars events take place in all Australian states and the Northern Territory, with the Australian Capital Territory formerly holding the Canberra 400. Jamie Whincup
Jamie Whincup (born 6 February 1983) is an Australian professional racing driver competing in the Supercars Championship. He currently is team principal for Triple Eight Race Engineering. He has driven the No. 88 Holden Commodore (ZB), Holden ZB Commodore, won a record seven Supercars championship titles, four Bathurst 1000 victories, and a Bathurst 12 Hour victory. Whincup is the all-time record holder in the Supercars Championship for race wins, at 124 career wins. He is also the first driver to win the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy twice at Pukekohe Park Raceway in Auckland, New Zealand. Symmons Plains Raceway
Symmons Plains Raceway is a motor racing circuit in Australia, located about south of Launceston, Tasmania. Since the closure of the Longford circuit in the 1960s it has been Tasmania's premier motor racing facility. The circuit is one of the longest serving circuits of the combined history of the Australian Touring Car Championship and the V8 Supercar Championship Series. Since 2005 it has hosted the Falken Tasmania Challenge for V8 Supercars. In 2004, the facility received a A$3 million upgrade which included some modifications to the layout of the track, including moving the start/finish line back to a more conventional location opposite the pits. It had previously been on a curve (which is now located just after the first corner), unusual for a road course. Tasmania SuperSprint
The Tasmania SuperSprint (formally known as the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint) is an annual motor racing event for Supercars, held at Symmons Plains Raceway in Launceston, Tasmania. The event has been a regular part of the Supercars Championship—and its previous incarnations, the Australian Touring Car Championship, Shell Championship Series and V8 Supercars Championship—since 1969. Behind Sandown Raceway, which has most commonly hosted the Sandown 500 and Sandown SuperSprint, Symmons Plains has hosted the most events in championship history with 49 as of 2022. 2016 Coates Hire V8 Supercars Challenge
The 2016 Coates Hire V8 Supercars Challenge was a motor racing event for V8 Supercars, held on the weekend of 17 to 20 March 2016. The event was held at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Victoria, and consisted of one race of 60 kilometres in length and three races of 65 km in length. It was a non-championship event, contested by teams taking part in the 2016 International V8 Supercars Championship, and was held in support of the 2016 Australian Grand Prix. The event was the 31st running of the V8 Supercars Challenge. The event was won by Shane van Gisbergen, who took victory in three of the four races across the weekend. Shane Robert van Gisbergen (born 9 May 1989) is a New Zealand racing driver in the Supercars Championship racing in the Number 97 Holden ZB Commodore car for Triple Eight Race Engineering. Garry Jacobson
Garry Jacobson (born 28 February 1992 in Shepparton, Australia) is an Australian motor racing driver. He previously competed in the Supercars Championship, driving the No. 76 Holden ZB Commodore for PremiAir Racing. Jacobson won the 2016 Supercars Dunlop Series with Prodrive Racing Australia in a Ford FG X Falcon. Jacobson entered the Supercars Championship full time in 2019, with Kelly Racing. Jacobson's best finish that season would be a 12th place at Surfers Paradise. He ended up finishing 23rd in the standings that season. In 2020, Jacobson defected to Matt Stone Racing. His best finish that season would be a 7th place at Sydney Motorsport Park. He improved slightly, finishing 21st in the points by the end of the season.
