2016 Umaglesi Liga
The 2016 Umaglesi Liga was a special transitional season of top-tier football in Georgia. Dinamo Tbilisi were the defending champions. This transitional season is a result of the Georgian Football Federation's decision to change the Umaglesi Liga season from an Autumn–Spring schedule to a Spring–Autumn one. The season began on 7 August 2016 and concluded with the second leg of the championship final on 11 December 2016. Teams and stadiums Sapovnela Terjola and Merani Martvili were relegated at the end of the previous season; they were not replaced. The league contracted from 16 teams to 14 this season; this will further be reduced to 10 for next season. Erovnuli Liga
The Erovnuli Liga ( ka, ეროვნული ლიგა - lit. National League) is the top division of professional football in Georgia. Since 1990, it has been organized by the Professional Football League of Georgia and Georgian Football Federation. From 1927 to 1989, the competition was held as a regional tournament within the Soviet Union. From 2017 the Erovnuli Liga switched to a spring-autumn system, with only 10 clubs in the top flight. FC Merani Martvili
FC Merani Martvili is a Georgian association football club based in Martvili, which currently takes part in Liga 2, the second division of Georgian league system. Being one of the youngest clubs, Merani have spent five seasons in the top division and once reached the final of David Kipiani Cup. History Football clubs from Martvili have previously been called Salkhino Gegechkori (Soviet times), Chkondidi Martvili and Salkhino Martvili. FC Merani was founded by Georgian ex-minister of communications Pridon Injia in 2006. Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena ( ''Boris P’aich’adzis erovnuli st’adioni''), formerly known as Boris Paichadze National Stadium, is a stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia, and the home stadium of Dinamo Tbilisi, Georgia national rugby union team and Georgia national football team. With a capacity of 54,139, the stadium is the largest in Georgia. Chele Arena is a multi-use stadium in Kobuleti, Georgia. Built in 1967, it is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of FC Shukura Kobuleti. FC Dinamo Batumi also used it until 2020. The stadium is able to hold 6,000 people. Sachkhere ( ka, საჩხერე) is a town at the northern edge of the Imereti Province in Western Georgia (country), Georgia. It is the center of the Sachkhere Municipality. FC Locomotive Tbilisi is a Georgian football club from the capital, Tbilisi. During the existence of the USSR the club was a part of the Lokomotiv Voluntary Sports Society. The club has strong connections with the Georgian Railways. History Locomotive was founded on 14 August 1936 as a part of Lokomotiv sports society. The club won Georgian championship in 1937, which gave them the permission to participate in USSR Top League. FC Shukura Kobuleti, commonly known as Shukura Kobuleti or simply Shukura, is a Georgian football club from Kobuleti, the second largest city of Adjara. After the 2022 season, they were promoted to Erovnuli Liga, the top tier of Georgian championship. History Established in 1968, Shukura played three seasons in the Soviet third division. After an independent Georgian league was formed in 1990, the club took part in II league competition before getting promoted to Umaglesi Liga for 1993/94.
