The race was rated as a 2.1 event as part of the 2016 UCI Europe Tour, and was the first edition of the Tour La Provence. 2016 UCI Europe Tour
The 2016 UCI Europe Tour was the twelfth season of the UCI Europe Tour. The 2016 season began on 28 January 2016 with the Vuelta a Mallorca, Trofeo Santanyí-Ses Salines-Campos and ended on 23 October 2016 with the Chrono des Nations. French rider Nacer Bouhanni (), who scored 721 points in the 2015 UCI Europe Tour, 2015 edition, was the defending champion of the 2015 UCI Europe Tour. Throughout the season, points were awarded to the top finishers of stages within stage races and the final general classification standings of each of the stages races and one-day events. The quality and complexity of a race also determined how many points were awarded to the top finishers; the higher the UCI rating of a race, the more points were awarded. Davide Martinelli (born 31 May 1993) is an Italian professional road bicycle racer, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Career Martinelli made his debut in an jersey in the 2016 Tour Down Under. On 24 February 2016, he scored a surprise first professional win in stage 2 of the Tour La Provence. He was the lead out man for Fernando Gaviria in the finale, but a crash split the peloton which allowed a chance for him to cross the line ahead of Gaviria. His maiden UCI World Tour win came on 12 July 2016 in the first stage of the Tour de Pologne. He attacked within the final kilometre, taking the victory ahead of Gaviria. Tour De La Provence
The Tour de la Provence is an early-season Road bicycle racing#Stage races, bicycle stage race in the Provence region of France. It is organized by southern French newspaper La Provence, which serves as the race's title sponsor for its first three years. It is held in February, as a UCI race classifications, 2.1 event on the UCI Europe Tour calendar. The race will become part of the new UCI ProSeries in 2020. ''La Provence'' has entrusted the organization of the event to Serge Pascal, who also organizes the Tour du Haut Var. The inaugural edition of 2016 was won by Thomas Voeckler. Francesco Gavazzi (born 1 August 1984) is an Italian professional road bicycle racer, who currently rides for UCI ProTeam . Career Gavazzi was born in Morbegno. In 2012, Gavazzi participated in the Tour of Beijing and won its queen stage leading to the Great Wall of China. To add to the difficulty of the day, the air quality was deemed as "severely polluted" by the local authorities. Gavazzi closed down an attack by 's Edvald Boasson Hagen and grabbed the victory. Jan Bakelants (born 14 February 1986) is a Belgian professional road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Career His major wins include the 2008 Tour de l'Avenir and stage 2 of the 2013 Tour de France, claiming the yellow jersey after winning the stage by only a second of an advantage on the peloton after a late attack. He also rode the 2010 Giro d'Italia, in which he finished 36th. Bakelants left at the end of the 2013 season, and joined for the 2014 season. In August 2014, it was announced that he would be leaving after one year and joining on an initial two-year deal.
