2016 Super Rugby Season
The 2016 Super Rugby season was the 21st season of Super Rugby and the first season featuring an expanded 18-team format. It was also the first season that teams outside Australia, New Zealand and South Africa featured, with the Jaguares from Argentina and the Sunwolves from Japan taking part. This season also saw the return of the Kings, who competed just once before, in the 2013 Super Rugby season. The round-robin games took place every weekend from 26 February to 16 July 2016 (with a break for international matches during June), followed by the finals series at the end of July and culminating in the final on 6 August. The Hurricanes won their first championship after repeating their efforts of 2015 by finishing first in the regular season and hosting the final at Westpac Stadium, but this time they won, beating the Lions 20–3. Newlands Stadium
The Newlands Stadium, referred to as DHL Newlands for sponsorship reasons, is located in Cape Town, South Africa. The stadium has a capacity of 51,900 people, but is not an all-seater venue. Vaea Tangitau Lapota Fifita (born 17 June 1992) is a Tongan Rugby Union, rugby union player who currently plays for the Scarlets. Previously he was a Lock (rugby union), lock or Flanker (rugby union), loose forward for the in the international Super Rugby competition, and for in the Mitre 10 Cup. Jason Christopher Woodward (born 17 May 1990 in Wellington, New Zealand) is a professional rugby union player who plays for Sale Sharks in the Premiership Rugby. Early career Woodward played for the Upper Hutt Premier team, and was a regular in the Upper Hutt Leader. James Marshall (rugby Union)
James Ryan Marshall (born 7 December 1988) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. He played in the First five-eighth, Fullback and occasionally Second five-eighth positions for the in Super Rugby and in the Bunnings NPC. He also captained the Taranaki Bulls in the ITM Cup. Angus Gardner
Angus Gardner (born 24 August 1984) is an Australian rugby union professional referee who was appointed to the Super Rugby referees panel in 2012. His first match in Super Rugby was between the Queensland Reds and Melbourne Rebels at Suncorp Stadium in March of that year. Gardner took up refereeing in 1999 at the age of fifteen, and became a full-time referee in 2015. He was appointed to his first test match in November 2011, which was an Oceania Cup match between Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu in Port Morseby. Liam Squire
Liam Ivan John Squire (born 20 March 1991) is a former New Zealand rugby union player from Tokomaru, New Zealand. He played in the Number 8 and Blindside flanker position for Tasman in the Mitre 10 Cup. Squire joined the NTT DoCoMo Red Hurricanes in Japan on a two-year deal after the 2019 season but later made an early return to New Zealand in September 2020. Waisake Ratunideuba Naholo (born 8 May 1991 Sigatoka, Fiji) is a New Zealand rugby union player. He previously played for the All Blacks Sevens and on the wing (and occasionally centre) position for London Irish. In May 2022 he signed with Rugby New York, who play in the Major League Rugby competition. Matthew Papali'i To’omua (born 2 January 1990) is an Australian rugby union professional player who has played over 35 times for since 2013. He plays for the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby and his usual position is at fly-half or inside centre.
