2016 Ottawa Fury FC Season
The 2016 Ottawa Fury FC season was the club's third season at the professional level, and its last in the North American Soccer League before its subsequent move to the United Soccer League. Off-season Staff On 20 November 2015, Paul Dalglish was announced as the club's new head coach, replacing Marc Dos Santos who had moved on to a head coaching position with Swope Park Rangers and an assistant coaching position with Sporting Kansas City. On 2 December 2015, the Fury announced that assistant coach Martin Nash and goalkeeping coach Bruce Grobbelaar had been re-signed for the 2016 season. A week later it was announced that technical director Philip Dos Santos had left the club for other opportunities and that former Chelsea academy coach Darko Buser had been promoted to the position. Ottawa Fury Football Club was a Canadian professional soccer club based in Ottawa, Ontario. The club competed in the North American Soccer League and USL Championship and played its home games at TD Place Stadium. The Ottawa Fury FC were dissolved as a soccer club on November 8, 2019 and their USL franchise rights were sold to Miami FC on December 11, 2019. An unrelated club, Atlético Ottawa, were formed in 2020 to enter the Canadian Premier League representing the city, with home games again at TD Place Stadium. History Formative years On June 20, 2011, the North American Soccer League announced that Ottawa had been awarded an expansion franchise. Marc Dos Santos (born May 26, 1977) is a Canadian soccer coach who is an assistant coach for Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer. He was previously the head coach of Montreal Impact (1992–2011), Montreal Impact in D2 Pro League and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, was North American Soccer League Coach of the Year in 2015, when he led the Ottawa Fury FC to the North American Soccer League (2011–2017), North American Soccer League Championship Final after a first-place finish in the Fall Season, coached at Swope Park Rangers of USL Championship, United Soccer League, San Francisco Deltas of NASL and assistant coach of Los Angeles FC. Tom Heinemann (born April 23, 1987) is an American former professional soccer player who is currently head coach for the United States U15 team. Career Youth and college Heinemann attended Christian Brothers College High School, and played college soccer at Rockhurst University from 2006 to 2008, where he was named to the NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II Men's All-America Team as a sophomore and as a junior. During his time at Rockhurst, Heinemann accumulated 36 goals and 21 assists while appearing in 60 games. He also played in the USL Premier Development League for St. Louis Lions, where he was a prolific goalscorer, netting 35 times in 36 games over three seasons with the team. Andrew Dennis Wiedeman (born August 22, 1989) is a retired American soccer player, who played as a forward. Romuald Désiré Peiser (born 3 August 1979) is a French former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He currently serves as the goalkeeper coach for CF Montreal of the MLS. Football career Peiser was born in Phalsbourg, Moselle. After unsuccessfully emerging through Paris Saint-Germain FC's youth system – only appeared for the reserves – he played in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen II and KFC Uerdingen, both in the lower leagues; subsequently, he spent one season in the Swiss Challenge League with FC Vaduz. Bruce David Grobbelaar (born 6 October 1957) is a Zimbabwean former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper, most prominently for English team Liverpool between 1981 and 1994, and for the Zimbabwean national team. He is remembered for his gymnastic-like athletic ability, unflappable confidence and eccentric and flamboyant style of play, as well as his rushing ability, which has led pundits to compare him retrospectively to the sweeper-keepers of the modern era.
