The Miami Marlins' 2016 season was the 24th season for the Major League Baseball franchise, and the fifth as the "Miami" Marlins. This was the first season under manager Don Mattingly. The Marlins finished in third place in the National League East and they failed to make the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season. National League East
The National League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. Along with the American League Central it is one of two divisions to have every member win at least one World Series title. The division was created when the National League (along with the American League) added two expansion teams and divided into two divisions, East and West effective for the 1969 season. The National League's geographical alignment was rather peculiar as its partitioning was really more north and south instead of east and west. Two teams in the Eastern Time Zone, the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds, were in the same division as teams on the Pacific coast. This was due to the demands of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, who refused to support expansion unless they were promised they would be kept together in the newly created East division. The 2016 Colorado Rockies season was the franchise's 24th in Major League Baseball. It was the 22nd season the Rockies played their home games at Coors Field. After doing reasonably well most of the season and even posting a 54-53 (.505) record as late as August 3, they collapsed through the months of August and September, going an MLB-worst 21-34 in that span to finish 75-87, third place in the National League West, and missing the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season. The Arizona Diamondbacks' 2016 season was the franchise's 19th season in Major League Baseball and their 19th season at Chase Field and in Phoenix, Arizona. The team finished at 69–93 for their third consecutive losing season, while spending a majority of the season in a back-and-forth battle with the San Diego Padres at the bottom of the NL West standings. The 2016 Pittsburgh Pirates season was the franchise's 135th season overall, the 130th season as a member of the National League, and the 16th season at PNC Park. The regular season started with a win at home against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 3 and ended with a loss to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on October 2. The Pirates finished the regular season third in the National League Central Division with 78 wins and 83 losses. For the first time since the 2012 season, the Pirates finished with a losing record and did not qualify for the postseason. The 2016 Chicago Cubs season was the 145th season of the Chicago Cubs franchise, the 141st in the National League and the Cubs' 101st season at Wrigley Field. The Cubs were managed by Joe Maddon in his second year as Cubs manager, and played their home games at Wrigley Field as members of the National League Central Division. To celebrate their 100 years at Wrigley, the Cubs wore a patch on their home uniforms and wore 1916 throwback uniforms on July 6. The 2016 New York Mets season was the franchise's 55th season. The Mets opened the season against their 2015 World Series opponent, the Kansas City Royals. This was the first time in the history of the league that World Series opponents played a rematch on Opening Day. This was made possible by interleague play being scattered throughout the season.
