2016 Manx General Election
General elections were held in the Isle of Man on 22 September 2016. Independents won 21 of the 24 seats in the House of Keys. A record number of women were elected (5, or 21% of the House). Electoral system Following changes to the electoral system ahead of the elections, the 24 members of the House of Keys were elected from 12 constituencies, each of which returned 2 members. House Of Keys
The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the 'Keys of Mann') and (the 'Keys of Law'). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ('to choose'). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for 'four and twenty': , the House having always had 24 members. The Manx-language name of the House remains ('The Four and Twenty'). Governance Members are known as ''Members of the House of Keys'' (MHKs). David Ashford
David John Ashford is an independent politician in the Isle of Man. He was born in 1977 in Douglas. He has served as a Member of the House of Keys (MHK) for the Douglas North constituency since 2016. Political career Previously he had been a Borough Councillor for Douglas. In January 2018 he was appointed as Minister for Health and Social Care succeeding Kate Beecroft. This position was widely described as a "poisoned chalice" due to the department's financial problems. In February 2020 he was briefly appointed as interim Minister for Home Affairs after the death of Bill Malarkey. Juan Paul Watterson FCA CMgr FCMI FRSA SHK (born 1980) is a Manx politician, who is Speaker of the House of Keys, and a member for Rushen, in the Isle of Man. Early life Born in 1980 to John and Alison Watterson, he was educated at Rushen Infants School, Rushen Junior School and Castle Rushen High School. Qualification and professional memberships Watterson attended the University of Lincoln (University of Lincolnshire & Humberside) where he graduated in 2001 with a First Class BA (Hons) in Management. Alex Allinson
Alexander John Allinson (born 1966) is an English-born Manx physician and politician who serves as an independent member of the House of Keys, representing Ramsey since 2016. Allinson serves on the Council of Ministers as the current Minister for the Treasury, having been appointed to the role in May 2022 by Alfred Cannan, the chief minister of the Isle of Man. Early life, education, and medical career Allinson was born in London in 1966. He attended from the Latymer Upper School, and studied medicine at King's College, Cambridge, graduating with a masters degree in 1991. Bill Shimmins
William 'Bill' Shimmins is a Scottish-born Manx politician. He represented the constituency of Middle in the House of Keys until 2021, having been first elected in 2016. Early life Shimmins was born in Scotland in 1965 and educated at Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh, Clydebank Technical College and the Glasgow College of Commerce. Career Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Shimmins worked as a banker in the UK. He spent time with both Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank before becoming Managing Director of Northern Bank (Isle of Man) Limited in 2002. Geoffrey Boot
Geoffrey Boot (born 1953) is an English-born politician who until 2021 served as a Member of the House of Keys for Glenfaba and Peel. Before moving to the Isle of Man, Boot also served as a Conservative Councillor and Mayor for Sandgate in Kent. Early life Geoffrey George Boot was born in Nottingham in 1953 and was educated in Sussex Coast College Hastings. Boot's time at college was cut short by a serious motorsport accident which left him hospitalised and forced him to leave further education. After the accident, Boot began his working career at Midland Bank before moving into surveying and estate agency work.
