2016 Kagoshima Gubernatorial Election
The 2016 Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima gubernatorial election was held on 10 July 2016 and contested by the three-term incumbent Yuichiro Ito and political journalist Satoshi Mitazono. Ito was denied a fourth term in office, as Mitazono received 55% of the vote following a campaign based primarily on change as well as opposition to the prefecture's operating nuclear power plant. The election was held on the same day as the 2016 Japanese House of Councillors election, national House of Councillors election, which helped increase voter turnout to 58.6%, compared to 43.8% at the previous election in 2012. Background Yuichiro Ito was first elected to the office of governor in a four-candidate race in July 2004, in which the 79-year-old incumbent did not seek re-election. He was re-elected with a large majority in the 2008 and 2012 elections. Satoshi Mitazono
is a Japanese politician and journalist who is the former governor of Kagoshima Prefecture. He defeated the incumbent Yūichirō Itō at an election held on 10 July 2016. Early life and education Mitazono was born in Ibusuki, Kagoshima in 1958. In 1980 he graduated from Waseda University with a bachelor's degree in education and was employed by TV Asahi as a political journalist. Pre-politics career During his career with TV Asahi, Mitazono was responsible for reporting on national politics. From 1990 he was the political reporter for ''News Station'', Asahi's daily night-time news program. In 2004 he was employed as a part-time lecturer at Waseda University's Graduate School of Public Management. Political career On 31 December 2015 Mitazono announced his intention to run in the July 2016 Kagoshima gubernatorial election as an independent candidate.
