2016 Guernsey General Election
The 2016 Guernsey general election was held on 27 April 2016 to elect 38 members of the States of Guernsey who will serve until 2020. There was a by-election in October 2016 to fill a vacancy in the district of Vale. Electoral system Following the 2012 general election, it was decided to reduce the number of seats from 45 to 38. This resulted in reductions to the number of seats in most electoral districts, although the districts themselves remained unchanged. A new electoral roll was drawn up, with 22,408 people registered to vote by 4 November 2015. The total passed 25,000 by 7 January 2016 and rose to 27,000 on 15 February, before reaching 30,320 when registration closed, higher than the 29,745 who registered for the 2012 elections. States Of Guernsey
The States of Guernsey (french: États de Guernesey), sometimes referred to as the Government of Guernsey, is the parliament and government of the British Crown dependency of Guernsey. Some laws and ordinances approved by the States of Guernsey also apply to Alderney and Sark (the other component parts of the Bailiwick of Guernsey) as "Bailiwick-wide legislation" with the consent of the governments of those islands. All enactments of the States of Guernsey apply to Herm as well as Guernsey, since Herm is directly administered by the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Saint Peter Port South
St. Peter Port South was an electoral district in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. It was created following the Machinery of Government changes which came into effect in 2004. Elections In Guernsey
Guernsey elects a legislature at the national level. The islands of Alderney and Sark also elect their own parliaments. Guernsey The Guernsey legislature, the States of Deliberation, consists of 38 elected members (known as Deputies) and two representatives of Alderney, with the Bailiff (or his Deputy) acting as Presiding Officer with neither a casting nor original vote. In addition the Law Officers of the Crown are members of the States of Deliberation but they may not vote and by convention only address the assembly when answering questions or offering legal advice on matters under debate. Mary Lowe (Guernsey Politician)
Mary May Lowe is a politician in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. She served in the island's legislature for 26 years, becoming Guernsey's longest-serving politician, before leaving office after the 2020 general election. Political career Lowe was first elected as a representative of the parish of Vale in the States of Guernsey, the bailiwick's legislature, in 1994. She was consistently reelected over the next two decades. Beginning in 2004 she served as social security minister on the States of Guernsey's Policy Council. She lost the ministerial position in 2007 to Diane Lewis, with Lowe attributing her election loss to the Fallgate scandal. After a long career in the legislature, Lowe became the first person to hold the title of "Mother of the House." David Jones (Guernsey Politician)
Dave Jones (1949 – 5 July 2016) was a member of the States of Guernsey and president of the States Trading Supervisory Board. Born in 1949, he was found in a cellar in Golders Green, London with his sister Kathleen. They were both suffering from malnutrition and influenza. David was taken into the care of Barnardo's where he remained until the age of 15 when he started work. He left England as a young man and settled in Guernsey in 1970, worked in the heavy plant industry, and was one of the island's government ministers. Married in 1978, he has two grown children and three grandchildren. He supported Guernsey's self-governance and independence. He was a member of the External Relations Group, supported island-wide voting, parish schools, tougher sentencing for criminal damage, tidal power, and the continuation of the social house-building programme. Lyndon Trott
Lyndon Trott (born 17 July 1964, St. Sampson, Guernsey) is an elected Deputy in the States of Guernsey and served as the Chief Minister of Guernsey from 2008 to 2012. Political appointments Deputy Trott has been a deputy in the States of Guernsey since 2000. Re-elected in 2004 and again in 2008. From 2004 until 2008 he was the Treasury and Resources Minister before being elected to the position of Chief Minister of Guernsey on 1 May 2008. His term of office expired on 30 April 2012. Saint Sampson, Guernsey
St Sampson (Guernésiais: ) is a parish of Guernsey, an island in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, directly north of St Peter Port. It is on the north-west and north-east coasts of the island and is split into two sections, intersected by Vale. The parish has a population of 8,966. Its residents are known as (the Guernésiais for frogs). What is currently the northern boundary of the parish originally ran along the south coast of Le Braye du Valle, a tidal channel that made the northern extremity of Guernsey, Le Clos du Valle, a tidal island. La Braye du Valle was drained and reclaimed in 1806 by the British Government as a defence measure. The eastern end of the former channel became the town and harbour (from 1820) of St. Sampson's, now the second biggest port in Guernsey. The western end of La Braye is now Le Grand Havre. Peter Ferbrache
Peter Terence Richard Ferbrache (born 1951) is an elected Deputy in the States of Guernsey and president of the Policy and Resources Committee. Early life and education Ferbrache was born in Guernsey where he was educated at Elizabeth College before going to a law school in England. He qualified as a barrister in England in 1972. Career He returned to Guernsey in 1980 and was called to the bar as an advocate in March 1981, later becoming senior partner of Mourant Ozannes. Alongside his political career he remains a consultant and notary public at Ferbrache & Farrell LLP. He was first elected in 1994 as a deputy for the Castel district before being elected in 1997 as an island wide conseiller, becoming president of the Board of Industry between 1997 and 2000. Percentage Point
A percentage point or percent point is the unit (measurement), unit for the Difference (mathematics), arithmetic difference between two percentages. For example, moving up from 40 percent to 44 percent is an increase of 4 percentage points, but a 10-percent increase in the quantity being measured.
