2016 Colombo Sevens
The 2016 Colombo Sevens was the third and final leg of the Asian Sevens Series for the year. The tournament was held between 15 and 16 October 2016 at the Colombo International Rugby Stadium. Hong Kong had their third straight tournament win in the series, defeating South Korea 24-19 in the Cup final. The victory secured Hong Kong the overall series title and a place in the international qualifier for the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens, which is part of the World Rugby Sevens Series. China defeated Sri Lanka 22-21 in the third/fourth place playoff however the home side secured enough overall points in the series to finish second and also secure a place in the international qualifier at the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens. In the plate final Malaysia defeated Japan 19-14. Colombo Racecourse
Colombo Racecourse ( si, කොළඹ තුරඟ තරඟ පිටිය) is a historical harness racing course in the Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. During the Second World War, it was used as a temporary airfield. In 2012, it was redeveloped as the Colombo Racecourse Sports Complex to become the first International Rugby Union ground in Sri Lanka to host all the national rugby union side's home matches. In 2014, the ground went through a major renovation, which included installation of floodlights and the conversion of a substantial part of the grandstand into a shopping and dining complex. 2017 Colombo Sevens
The 2017 Asia Rugby Sevens Series is the ninth edition of Asia's continental sevens tournament. The lower-tier Trophy tournament hosted in Qatar served as a qualifier, with the top team qualifying for the main series hosted in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Sri Lanka. The top two teams that are not already core teams on the Sevens World Series will earn qualification to the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens for a chance to earn core team status for the following World Series. The 2016 Asia Rugby Sevens Series is the eighth edition of Asia's continental sevens tournament. It was played over three legs hosted in Hong Kong, South Korea, and Sri Lanka. The top two teams besides Japan qualifying for the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens for a chance to win a place as a World Rugby Sevens Series core team. The size of the series has been reduced from twelve teams in 2015 to eight teams in 2016. Hong Kong National Rugby Sevens Team
The Hong Kong national rugby sevens team is a regular participant in the Rugby World Cup Sevens. The team's greatest achievements include winning the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and winning the Asian Sevens Series in 2012, 2014 and 2016. Their current coach is Paul John. Formerly Dai Rees was the head coach. The men’s and women’s Hong Kong national sevens teams were granted elite sport status by the Hong Kong Sports Institute on 1 April 2013, which means the HKRFU national sevens teams receive an annual stipend to be distributed to qualified players from the target teams. The South Korea national rugby sevens team is a minor national sevens side. They sometimes take part in the Rugby World Cup Sevens, and have competed in the Hong Kong Sevens since the 1980s. The 2017 Hong Kong Sevens was the 42nd edition of the Hong Kong Sevens tournament, and the seventh tournament of the 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series. The tournament was played on 7–9 April 2017 at Hong Kong Stadium in Hong Kong. England's Dan Norton scored his 245th career try during the tournament, breaking Kenya's Collins Injera's record of 244 career tries in the World Rugby Sevens Series.
