2016 Birthday Honours
The 2016 Queen's Birthday Honours are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries. The Birthday Honours are awarded as part of the Queen's Official Birthday celebrations during the month of June. The Queen's Birthday Honours were announced on 6 June 2016 in New Zealand and 10 June in the United Kingdom. The recipients of honours are displayed as they were styled before their new honour. They are arranged by the country (in order of precedence) whose ministers advised the Queen on the appointments, then by honour with grades, ''i.e.'' Knight/Dame Grand Cross, Knight/Dame Commander ''etc.'', and then by divisions, ''i.e.'' Civil, Diplomatic and Military as appropriate. Commonwealth Realm
A Commonwealth realm is a sovereign state in the Commonwealth of Nations whose monarch and head of state is shared among the other realms. Each realm functions as an independent state, equal with the other realms and nations of the Commonwealth. King Charles III succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, as monarch of each Commonwealth realm following her death on 8 September 2022. Royal Opera House
The Royal Opera House (ROH) is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The large building is often referred to as simply Covent Garden, after a previous use of the site. It is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The first theatre on the site, the Theatre Royal (1732), served primarily as a playhouse for the first hundred years of its history. In 1734, the first ballet was presented. A year later, the first season of operas, by George Frideric Handel, began. Many of his operas and oratorios were specifically written for Covent Garden and had their premieres there. The current building is the third theatre on the site, following disastrous fires in 1808 and 1856 to previous buildings. Simon Robey
Sir Simon Christopher Townsend Robey (born 5 July 1960) is a British investment banker and supporter of cultural organisations. Early life and education Robey was adopted as a child and grew up in Cambridge. He has described himself as an 'odd child', with a 'fairly nerdy' upbringing. He attended Reed's School in Cobham before moving onto Magdalen College, Oxford as a choral scholar to read English. Business career Robey worked for several investment banks. Crossrail
Crossrail is a railway construction project mainly in central London. Its aim is to provide a high-frequency hybrid commuter rail and rapid transit system crossing the capital from suburbs on the west to east, by connecting two major railway lines terminating in London: the Great Western Main Line and the Great Eastern Main Line. The project was approved in 2007, and construction began in 2009 on the central section and connections to existing lines that became part of the route, which has been branded the Elizabeth line in honour of Queen Elizabeth II who opened the line on 17 May 2022 during her Platinum Jubilee. The central section of the line between Paddington and Abbey Wood opened on 24 May 2022, with 12 trains per hour. Terry Morgan
Sir Terence Keith Morgan (born 28 December 1948) is a British engineer. Early life Terry Morgan was born in 1948. His early education was at Croesycelliog Secondary Modern School. He studied for an HND at Newport and Monmouthshire College of Technology. Morgan graduated from Birmingham University with an MSc degree in Engineering Production and Management. Career Morgan became Chairman of Crossrail in 2009. Between 2002 and 2009 he was Chief Executive Officer of Tube Lines, the public–private partnership company that was responsible for the maintenance, renewal and upgrade of the infrastructure of three London Underground lines. Sir Paul Roderick Clucas Marshall (born 2 August 1959) is a British investor. According to the ''Sunday Times Rich List'' in 2020, Marshall is worth £630 million. Philip Hulme
Sir Philip William Hulme (born 1948) is the co-founder of Computacenter, one of the United Kingdom's largest computer businesses. Career Having graduated at Imperial College, London with a first class degree in engineering, Hulme secured a Harkness Fellowship and joined the MBA Programme at Harvard Business School. He then joined Boston Consulting Group becoming a Vice-President and Director in 1979. Hulme, together with his former Harvard colleague Peter Ogden founded Computacenter in 1981 and expanded it into one of the United Kingdom's largest computer businesses. When the Company floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1998 Hulme gave much of the proceeds from the sale of his shares to charity. He served as Chairman of Computacenter from 1998 to 2001.
