Fantasy Battles
Fantasy is a genre of speculative fiction involving magical elements, typically set in a fictional universe and sometimes inspired by mythology and folklore. Its roots are in oral traditions, which then became fantasy literature and drama. From the twentieth century, it has expanded further into various media, including film, television, graphic novels, manga, animations and video games. Fantasy is distinguished from the genres of science fiction and horror by the respective absence of scientific or macabre themes, although these genres overlap. In popular culture, the fantasy genre predominantly features settings that emulate Earth, but with a sense of otherness. In its broadest sense, however, fantasy consists of works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians from ancient myths and legends to many recent and popular works. Glen Orbik
Glen Orbik (1963 – May 11, 2015) was an American illustrator known for his fully painted paperback and comic covers, often executed in a noir style. In the 1970s, Orbik and his mother moved to Douglas County, Nevada. He is a 1981 graduate of Douglas High School in Minden, Nevada. He studied art at the California Art Institute then located in Encino, later Calabasas, California, and now located in Westlake Village. He studied under the school's founder, retired movie and advertisement illustrator Fred Fixler. Orbik eventually took over the classes when Fixler retired from teaching and taught figure drawing after returning from an extended hiatus. His work has been compared to Alex Ross and Robert McGinnis, and he was a popular teacher among fine art, comic, and video game artists. ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (commonly abbreviated as ''D&D'' or ''DnD'') is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game was first published in 1974 by TSR (company)#Tactical Studies Rules, Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). It has been published by Wizards of the Coast (now a subsidiary of Hasbro) since 1997. The game was derived from miniature wargaming, miniature wargames, with a variation of the 1971 game Chainmail (game), ''Chainmail'' serving as the initial rule system. ''D&D'' publication is commonly recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry, and also deeply influenced video games, especially the role-playing video game genre. Big Eyes, Small Mouth
''Big Eyes, Small Mouth'' (''BESM'') is a tabletop role-playing game originally produced by Guardians of Order in 1997 that was designed to simulate the action of anime and manga. The title alludes to the common anime drawing style of characters with large expressive eyes and comparatively small mouths. Gameplay BESM uses a point-based character creation system. Players roll two 6-sided dice, add 10 to the total and then divide the resultant sum between Mind, Body, and Soul, against which all action checks are made. These are supplemented by Attributes, which can be positive (Acrobatics) or negative (Easily Distracted), giving the characters unique abilities. First edition The initial edition, designed by Mark C. MacKinnon, was released by Guardians of Order in 1997. Soon after that, RPG writer David L. Francis Tsai
Francis Tsai (April 14, 1967 – April 23, 2015) was an American comic book artist, illustrator, author and conceptual artist. He was of Taiwanese and Japanese ancestry. Early life Tsai was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Lubbock, Texas. He initially studied chemistry, before receiving a graduate degree in architecture. Career In 1998, Francis Tsai joined Presto Studios as Conceptual Designer where he provided visual development and game design for the video games '' Myst 3'', and '' Star Trek: Hidden Evil''. In 2003, Tsai joined High Moon Studios where he was principal concept artist for the video games ''The Bourne Conspiracy'' and ''Darkwatch''. Tsai had illustrated cards for the ''Magic: The Gathering'' collectible card game. In 2009, Tsai worked on a five-issue graphic novel miniseries called ''Tracker'' for Top Cow Productions. ''The Judge Dredd Roleplaying Game'' is a science fiction role-playing game published by Mongoose Publishing in 2002 and 2009. It is based on '' Judge Dread'' from '' 2000 AD'' comic. Publication history In 2002, Mongoose Publishing having acquired the rights to publish games set in the worlds created by ''2000AD'', released ''The Judge Dredd Roleplaying Game''. Based on the d20 System, they published a total of 15 supplements. It was also supported by their in-house magazine, ''Signs & Portents''. In 2009, Mongoose released a new edition, using their Traveller rules set. It was announced that their license was ending in late 2016. Brett Ewins
Brett Ewins (1955 – 16 February 2015) was a British comic book artist best known for his work on ''Judge Dredd'' and ''Rogue Trooper'' in the weekly anthology comic '' 2000 AD''. Biography Ewins studied Conceptual Art at Goldsmiths College, where he was also taught fine art by Michael Craig-Martin. Ewins met future collaborator Peter Milligan at Goldsmiths, and left in 1977. In 1980, Ewins held a solo exhibition of his work at Frestonia's ''Car Breaker Gallery'' in London, a squat in Ladbroke Grove's Republic of Frestonia. Ewins formed a long-term collaborative partnership with fellow artist Brendan McCarthy who also showed at the Car Breaker Gallery, creating the comic ''Sometime Stories'', which faltered after the first issue leaving the second issue completed but unpublished. On the strength of ''Sometime Stories'', Ewins soon started providing covers for '' 2000 AD'', the first being issue #33 published in October of the same year. John Hill (game Designer)
John Evans Hill (February 21, 1945 – January 12, 2015) was an American designer of military board wargames, as well as rules for miniature wargaming. He is best known as the designer of the Avalon Hill board game ''Squad Leader'' and the American Civil War miniatures game ''Johnny Reb (game), Johnny Reb''. He was inducted into the Charles Roberts Awards Hall of Fame. Early life John Evans Hill never knew his biological father, John T. Hill, who was killed in action during World War II while his mother Marian Jane Hill was pregnant. John Evans Hill was born on February 21, 1945 in Chicago and grew up in Elmhurst, Illinois. When Hill was three years old, his mother married Edward F. Whitley, who became the man Hill identified as his father. Hill also had a half-brother, Richard Whitley, a notable film and television writer.
