2014–15 Fencing World Cup
The 44th FIE Fencing World Cup began in October 2014 and concluded in July 2015 at the 2015 World Fencing Championships held in Moscow. Season overview This edition was the first to feature the new Grand Prix format, consisting in nine events, three in each weapon, men and women fencing together. World Cup and Grand Prix competitions were spread over ten months instead of six. The calendar overhaul was designed to allow more time for the athletes to train and rest as well as to increase media visibility. The season saw the opening of the qualifying path for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The first competition counting for Olympic qualification was held on the 2 and 3 May for all three weapons, an event dubbed as the "super weekend" in Italy. Fencing World Cup
The FIE Fencing World Cup is an international fencing competition held by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime. In each weapon (Men's and Women's Épée, Sabre and Foil), three Grand Prix, five World Cup events and several satellite events are contested each season. The five top results as well as the Olympic Games or World Fencing Championships and zonal championships results are taken into account for each fencer's rankings. For teams, up to five World Cup events are held each year. Arianna Errigo (born 6 June 1988) is an Italian left-handed foil and sabre fencer. Errigo is a nine-time team European champion, two-time individual European champion, six-time team world champion, and two-time individual world champion. Known for her aggressive and fast fencing, she is regarded as one of the greatest fencers of all time. A three-time Olympian, Errigo is a 2021 team Olympic bronze medalist, 2012 team Olympic champion, and 2012 individual Olympic silver medalist. Ronan Gustin
Ronan Gustin (born 17 August 1987) is a French épée fencer, team European and World champion in 2011. Career Gustin took up fencing at the early age of three at ASPTT Dijon. His junior results were unremarkable, but his build and motivation had him noticed by national coach Jérôme Roussat, who invited him to train with the French national team at INSEP, first as a guest in 2008, then as a full member in 2010, after he was silver medallist in the 2009 French national championship. In his first senior season he earned a bronze medal at the 2011 Heidenheim World Cup and a silver medal at the 2015 Vancouver World Cup. These results caused him to be selected for the 2011 European Championships in Sheffield. Enrico Garozzo (; born 21 June 1989 in Catania, Sicily) is an Italian right-handed épée fencer and 2016 Olympic silver medalist. Garozzo is an athlete of the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri. Biography Garozzo won a silver medal at the 2006 Cadets World Fencing Championship in Taebaek, then took the gold at the 2008 Junior World Fencing Championship in his childhood city Acireale. Amongst seniors, he made his first Fencing World Cup podium in 2010 with a third place in the Grand Prix de Berne. Mariel Leigh Zagunis (born March 3, 1985) is an American sabre fencer. She is a two-time Olympic champion in the individual sabre ( 2004 and 2008) and the first American to win a gold medal in Olympic fencing. She was Team USA flag bearer in the 2012 Summer Olympics Parade of Nations. She has two Olympic bronze team medals (in 2008 and 2016) and is a five-time Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020). Gu Bon-gil ( or ; born 27 April 1989) is a South Korean right-handed sabre fencer. Gu is an eight-time team Asian champion, seven-time individual Asian champion, and three-time team world champion. A three-time Olympian, Gu is a two-time team Olympic champion. Early life A native of Daegu, Gu had played football all through elementary and middle school and went on to Osung High School, which was the alma mater of his 2012 Olympics teammate Oh Eun-seok. The fencing coach at Osung High School had already noticed him in middle school and persuaded him to switch sports. The 43rd FIE Fencing World Cup began in October 2013 and concluded in July 2014 at the 2014 World Fencing Championships held in Kazan. The World Cup medals were awarded during the FIE's gala dinner in Rome at Palazzo Colonna on 22 November 2014. Season overview Several high-profile fencers returned to competition after post-London 2012 breaks, including Romania's Simona Gherman, Italia's Mara Navarria and Russia's Sofiya Velikaya. The season saw the domination of Italy in women's foil. In individual foil, Arianna Errigo win her fourth World Cup series in women's foil, the third time in a row.
