2013–14 Fencing World Cup
The 43rd FIE Fencing World Cup began in October 2013 and concluded in July 2014 at the 2014 World Fencing Championships held in Kazan. The World Cup medals were awarded during the FIE's gala dinner in Rome at Palazzo Colonna on 22 November 2014. Season overview Several high-profile fencers returned to competition after post-London 2012 breaks, including Romania's Simona Gherman, Italia's Mara Navarria and Russia's Sofiya Velikaya. The season saw the domination of Italy in women's foil. In individual foil, Arianna Errigo win her fourth World Cup series in women's foil, the third time in a row. Fencing World Cup
The FIE Fencing World Cup is an international fencing competition held by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime. In each weapon (Men's and Women's Épée, Sabre and Foil), three Grand Prix, five World Cup events and several satellite events are contested each season. The five top results as well as the Olympic Games or World Fencing Championships and zonal championships results are taken into account for each fencer's rankings. For teams, up to five World Cup events are held each year. Gauthier Grumier (born 29 May 1984, in Nevers) is a French left-handed épée fencer. Grumier is a three-time team European champion, 2015 individual European champion, and five-time team world champion. A two-time Olympian, Grumier is a 2016 team Olympic champion and 2016 individual Olympic bronze medalist. Career Grumier won the gold medal in the épée team event at the 2006 World Fencing Championships after beating Spain in the final. He accomplished this with his teammates Érik Boisse, Ulrich Robeiri and Fabrice Jeannet. He was also part of the French teams that won in 2010, 2011 and 2014. András Rédli (born 21 October 1983) is a Hungarian right-handed épée fencer, 2010 team European champion, 2014 individual European champion, 2013 team world champion, and 2016 Olympic medalist. Career Rédli won the team gold medal in the 2013 World Championships at home in Budapest and the team gold in the 2009 European Championships in Plovdiv. Enrico Garozzo (; born 21 June 1989 in Catania, Sicily) is an Italian right-handed épée fencer and 2016 Olympic silver medalist. Garozzo is an athlete of the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri. Biography Garozzo won a silver medal at the 2006 Cadets World Fencing Championship in Taebaek, then took the gold at the 2008 Junior World Fencing Championship in his childhood city Acireale. Simferopol Incident
On 18 March 2014, a Ukrainian soldier and a Russian Cossack paramilitary were killed in the first case of bloodshed during the Russian military intervention in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. Russian media and Crimean authorities stated the day after that a 17-year-old Ukrainian had been detained, but on the day following that the Crimean prosecutor denied any detentions. None of the accounts of this event could be verified independently. The Ukrainian and the Crimean authorities provided conflicting reports of the event.
