2014 Women's World Wheelchair Basketball Championship
Separate men's and women's Wheelchair Basketball World Championship tournaments were held in 2014. The women's tournament was held at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Canada between 20 and 28 June 2014. It was the largest women's wheelchair basketball world championship in history, with 12 national teams participating. Each team selected a squad of 12 players for the tournament. Medalists Awards Inge Huitzing (Netherlands) was named the most valuable player of the tournament. She was the tournament's top point scorer with 175 points, an average of 21.8 points per game. Janet McLachlan (Canada), Katie Harnock (Canada), Rebecca Murray (United States), Desiree Miller (United States) and Annika Zeyen (Germany) were named to the All Star Five. Mattamy Athletic Centre
Maple Leaf Gardens is a historic building located at the northwest corner of Carlton Street and Church Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The building was initially constructed in 1931 as an arena to host ice hockey games, though it has since been reconstructed for other uses. Today, Maple Leaf Gardens is a multi-purpose facility, with Loblaws occupying retail space on the lower floors and an arena for Toronto Metropolitan University, known as Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, occupying the top level. Considered one of the "cathedrals" of hockey, it was home to the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League from 1931 to 1999. Tracey Ferguson
Tracey Ferguson is a Canadian Paralympic wheelchair basketball player. She has won several gold medals including at three different Paralympic Games. Early life Tracey Ferguson was born on September 7, 1974, in Holland Landing, Ontario. She was the last of six children and her initial ambition was to be a swimmer. She was left paralysed after an operation on her spine at the age of nine, but four years later she was being introduced to wheelchair basketball. Her mother was unsure about this sport as she thought her five foot tall daughter was too small to compete. Annabel Breuer
Annabel Breuer (born 23 October 1992) is a wheelchair fencer and 1.5 point wheelchair basketball player. She has played for SKV Ravensburg and Sabres Ulm in the German wheelchair basketball league. In December 2012 she was contracted to play for first division club RSV Lahn-Dill as well as Sabres Ulm. She has also played the national team, with which she won two European titles, was runner-up at 2010 World Championships, and won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. After the London Games, President Joachim Gauck awarded the team Germany's highest sporting honour, the ''Silbernes Lorbeerblatt'' (Silver Laurel Leaf). Maya Lindholm (born 20 December 1990) is a 2.5 point wheelchair basketball player, who played with the German national team that won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Gesche Schünemann
Gesche Schünemann (born 18 November 1982) is a German former wheelchair basketball player and Paralympian who was part of the team that took the silver medal in the women's wheelchair basketball at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, and the gold medal-winning team in wheelchair basketball at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. After a promising basketball career was cut short by an Anterior cruciate ligament injury when she was a teenager, Schünemann took up wheelchair basketball, playing her first game in 2000. Laura Fürst
Laura Fürst (born 24 April 1991) is a German 2.0 point national wheelchair basketball player who plays in the wheelchair basketball league for RBB Munich, and for the German national team, with which she won silver at the 2014 Women's World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto. Biography Laura Fürst was born in Munich on 24 April 1991. On 8 March 2008, while she was a 16-year-old exchange student at Petoskey High School in Petoskey, Michigan, Fürst was operating a snowmobile on a trail near Pleasantview Township, Michigan, when she lost control and crashed into a tree. Edina Müller (born 28 June 1983) is a German Disability sport classification#Wheelchair basketball, 2.5 point wheelchair basketball player and KL1 (classification), KL1 canoeist. She played for ASV Bonn in the German wheelchair basketball league, and for the national team. Simone Kues (born 8 November 1976) is a German 1 point player, 1.0 point national wheelchair basketball player who plays in the wheelchair basketball league for Hamburg SV. She joined the national team, and participated in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, at which the German team came fourth.
