2014 Virginia Cavaliers Baseball Team
The 2014 Virginia Cavaliers baseball team represents the University of Virginia in the 2014 NCAA Division I baseball season. Head Coach Brian O'Connor is in his 11th year coaching the Cavaliers, who play their home games at Davenport Field. They compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division. 2014 was a very good year for Virginia baseball. The Cavaliers made their first trip to a College World Series Finals, where they were defeated in a best-of-three game series by Vanderbilt. UVA posted a 53–16 record – its fourth 50-win season in the last five years – winning the Charlottesville Regional and Super Regional en route to its third trip to Omaha in the last six seasons. As the tournament's No. 3 national seed, UVA won four games at the CWS in reaching the CWS championship game. Brian O'Connor (baseball Coach)
Brian Patrick O'Connor (born April 20, 1971) is the head baseball coach of the Virginia Cavaliers. Previously serving as an Associate Head Coach at Notre Dame, he was hired on July 8, 2003, to replace the retiring Dennis Womack (who moved on to assistant athletic director of facilities management and operations). O'Connor has taken the Virginia baseball team to fourteen NCAA baseball tournaments during his 15 seasons in Charlottesville, including the 2009 College World Series, the first in school history; the 2011 College World Series, as the No. 1 national seed; the 2014 College World Series, as the No. 3 national seed; and the 2015 College World Series, which they won and became National Champions for the first time in school history. 2014 VMI Keydets Baseball Team
The 2014 VMI Keydets baseball team represented the Virginia Military Institute during the 2014 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Keydets played their final season as a member of the Big South Conference, as they returned to the Southern Conference in 2014–15. VMI was led by 11th-year head coach Marlin Ikenberry, and they play their home games out of Gray–Minor Stadium. On February 21, 2014, VMI junior starting pitcher Reed Garrett threw a no-hitter against Lafayette in a 3–0 win. Garrett struck out 13 batters, including 5 of the final 6, in what was the first regular season no-hitter in Gray–Minor Stadium history, and only the second overall. VMI ended the year with a 25–23 overall mark, and 11–16 in conference play, missing out on the Big South tournament for the third straight year. Brooks Field (Wilmington)
Brooks Field is a stadium located on the campus of the University of North Carolina Wilmington in Wilmington, North Carolina. Brooks Field is the home of the UNC Wilmington Seahawks baseball team and has hosted the Colonial Athletic Association baseball tournament a number of times (1989–90, 1993, 2004–11, 2014, 2017). The 2014 Kentucky Wildcats baseball team represented the University of Kentucky in the 2014 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Wildcats played their home games in Cliff Hagan Stadium. Mike Papi
Michael Joseph Papi (born September 19, 1992) is an American former professional baseball outfielder. Papi attended the University of Virginia, where he played college baseball for the Virginia Cavaliers. In his collegiate career, he was named an All-American. He played professionally in the Cleveland Indians organization. Career Papi attended Tunkhannock Area High School in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. He played for the school's baseball team, competing in the Wyoming Valley Conference. With Tunkhannock, Papi was a member of two consecutive district champions, and his 2011 team reached the state championship. Joseph Edward McCarthy Jr. (born February 23, 1994) is an American professional baseball left fielder and first baseman in the Texas Rangers organization. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Francisco Giants. He played college baseball for the University of Virginia. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7 (left field), 8 (center field) and 9 (right field). Nick Paul Howard (born April 16, 1993) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. He played college baseball at Virginia. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft and has pitched for the Reds organization in parts of 5 seasons. Daniel Pinero (born May 2, 1994) is a Canadian professional baseball shortstop for the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
