2014 Reno Mayoral Election
The 2014 Reno mayoral election was held on November 4, 2014 to elect the mayor of Reno, Nevada. The mayor of Reno is a non-partisan position. The incumbent mayor, Bob Cashell, was not eligible to run due to term limits. Hillary Schieve was elected mayor. In February 2014, Eddie Lorton, who was a candidate himself, led a campaign which eliminated two candidates, Dwight Dortch and Jessica Sferraza, from the race. The Nevada Supreme Court responded to Lorton's suit by ruling that people who already served for 12 years on the city council could not run for mayor. Although Cashell had previously said he would not endorse any candidate, in late May he endorsed Raymond "Pez" Pezonella. Results Primary The primary was held on June 10, 2014. Reno ( ) is a city in the northwest section of the U.S. state of Nevada, along the Nevada-California border, about north from Lake Tahoe, known as "The Biggest Little City in the World". Known for its casino and tourism industry, Reno is the county seat and largest city of Washoe County and sits in the High Eastern Sierra foothills, in the Truckee River valley, on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. The Reno metro area (along with the neighboring city Sparks) occupies a valley colloquially known as the Truckee Meadows which because of large-scale investments from Greater Seattle and San Francisco Bay Area companies such as Amazon, Tesla, Panasonic, Microsoft, Apple, and Google has become a new major technology center in the United States. Bob Cashell
Robert Alan Cashell (April 22, 1938 – February 11, 2020) was an American businessman and politician. He served as the mayor of Reno, Nevada from 2002 to 2014. He served as the 28th Lieutenant Governor of Nevada from 1983 to 1987 and on the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents from 1979 to 1982. He served as a board member for Station Casinos from June 17, 2011 until his death on February 11, 2020. Cashell was a moderate member of the Republican Party and was a former member of the Democratic Party. Biography Because of Bob Cashell's large contributions to UNR students, a football team field house at the University of Nevada was constructed, and named after him. Hillary Schieve
Hillary Louise Schieve (born October 12, 1970) is an American businesswoman and politician from the U.S. state of Nevada. She has been the mayor of Reno, Nevada since 2014 and is not affiliated with a political party. Career Schieve was on the Reno City Council from 2012 to 2014. Schieve was one of 20 candidates on the primary ballot in 2014. She ultimately ran for mayor in 2014 and beat her opponent, Raymond "Pez" Pezonella, a Democrat, 60.90% to 39.10% in the Washoe County election. She was elected to the position of City of Reno Mayor on November 4, 2014, and sworn in eight days later. Although the mayor's office is a non-partisan position, she received support from the Democratic Party prior to winning the mayoral election. Nevada Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of Nevada is the highest state court of the U.S. state of Nevada, and the head of the Nevada Judiciary. The main constitutional function of the Supreme Court is to review appeals made directly from the decisions of the district courts. The Supreme Court does not pursue fact-finding by conducting trials, but rather determines whether legal errors were committed in the rendering of the lower court's decision. While the Court must consider all cases filed, it has the discretion to send appeals to the Nevada Court of Appeals for final resolution, as well as the power to determine the jurisdiction of that court. There are seven Justices on the court, who are elected to six-year terms in officially nonpartisan elections and who are not subject to term limits, which were rejected by voters in 1996. The Nevada general election, 2014 was held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, throughout Nevada. The active political parties participated in the 2014 election were the two major political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party as well as the minor political parties of the Independent American Party of Nevada, the Nevada Green Party, and the Libertarian Party of Nevada.
