2013–14 Iraqi Premier League
The 2013–14 Iraqi Premier League was the 40th season of the competition since its establishment in 1974. The name of the league was changed from ''Iraqi Elite League'' to ''Iraqi Premier League'', and the season began on 29 October 2013. The situation in Iraq caused by the war with ISIS began to worsen towards the end of spring 2014, with increased unrest in the country causing travel difficulties and concerns over the feasibility of scheduling the remaining fixtures, particularly with the month of Ramadan approaching. On 18 June 2014, after the end of round 23 of 30, the Iraq Football Association (IFA) announced in an official statement that it had decided to end the league at its current stage and consider the league table as final, without relegating any teams. First-placed Al-Shorta and second-placed Erbil would not be crowned as champions and runners-up respectively, but would be considered as such only for the purpose of enabling admission into the AFC Cup. Iraqi Premier League
The Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز) is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraq Division One. The league was formed by the IFA in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs First Division, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq. The current format sees 20 teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Of the 80 teams to have competed since the inception of the league in 1974, eleven have won the title. Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Talaba and Al-Shorta, who together contest the Baghdad derbies. Amanat Baghdad Sport Club ( ar, نادي أمانة بغداد الرياضي, lit=Mayoralty of Baghdad) is a football team based in Karkh District, Baghdad, Iraq, that competes in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. Formed in 1957 as Amanat Al-Asima ( ar, أمانة العاصمة, lit=Capital Mayoralty), the team merged with Al-Baladiyat SC in 1977, who had finished as runners-up of the 1975–76 Iraq FA Cup. Khodor Salame
Khodr Jihad Salame ( ar, خضر جهاد سلامة; born 4 December 1984) is a Lebanese former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Club career Salame helped Safa reach the final of the 2008 AFC Cup, defeating Indian club Dempo in the semi-final. In March 2021, Salame joined Sagesse in the Lebanese Second Division ahead of the second leg of the 2020–21 season. Salame retired at the end of the season. Hammadi Ahmed Abdullah Al-Daiya ( ar, حمادي احمد عبدالله الدعية; born 18 October 1989 in Samarra) is an Iraqi professional footballer who plays as a striker for Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya and the Iraq national team. Club career The player started his career with two local clubs in the lower divisions, first at hometown side Al-Ishaqi and then Balad. Amjad Radhi Yousif Al-Janabi ( ar, أمجد راضي; born 17 July 1990) is an Iraqi professional footballer who currently plays for Erbil in the Iraqi Premier League. He won the 2009–10 Iraqi Premier League and 2012–13 Iraqi Premier League top scorer awards, as well as the 2012 AFC Cup top scorer award. Baghdad Derbies
The Baghdad derbies are a series of derby matches between four Baghdad-based football clubs: Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Shorta, Al-Talaba and Al-Zawraa, collectively known as the 'Popular Teams'. They are the four most successful teams in the history of Iraqi football, and league games between the clubs are played at the neutral venue of Al-Shaab Stadium to accommodate more spectators. The match between Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya and Al-Zawraa is often referred to as the Iraqi El Clásico. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya were the first to be founded in 1931, and Montakhab Al-Shorta were founded in 1932, with these two sides developing a strong rivalry during the Iraq Central FA League era. Karbalaa FC
Karbala Sport Club is an Iraqi football club based in Karbala that plays in the Iraqi Premier League, the top tier of Iraqi football. SWAT Incident On June 23, 2013, after a match against Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, seven football players of Karbala FC and their coach were beaten by the anti-terror police. Al-Karkh SC
Al-Karkh Sports Club ( ar, نادي الكرخ الرياضي) is an Iraqi sports club based in Karkh, Baghdad. Its professional football team plays in the Iraqi Premier League, the top tier of the Iraqi football. The club's home stadium is Al-Saher Ahmed Radhi Stadium. Founded in 1963, Al-Karkh was not successful in reaching the top-flight of Iraqi football until Al-Rasheed SC's properties and place in the top division were transferred to Al-Karkh when Al-Rasheed were dissolved in 1990. In 2022, Al-Karkh achieved its first Iraq FA Cup title with a 2–1 victory over Al-Kahrabaa in the final. Al-Minaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الميناء الرياضي, lit=Port Sports Club) is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra that participates in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Minaa was founded on November 22, 1931, in Al-Maqal. In 1974, the club was merged with another team called Al-Bareed to form a single club called Al-Muwasalat, and it was a strange situation because the Al-Bareed team were based in Baghdad while Al-Minaa were based in Basra and the two teams met in Baghdad on the day of the match only, so after just one season the club was dissolved and Al-Minaa returned in their place.
