2013 Laurence Olivier Awards
The 2013 Laurence Olivier Awards were held on Sunday 28 April 2013 at the Royal Opera House, London. The awards were sponsored by MasterCard for the third consecutive year and presented by Hugh Bonneville and Sheridan Smith, with music from the BBC Concert Orchestra. Live coverage of the awards was provided by BBC Radio 2, presented by Ken Bruce and for the first time in over a decade, the awards were televised, with a highlights programme on ITV1. Royal Opera House
The Royal Opera House (ROH) is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The large building is often referred to as simply Covent Garden, after a previous use of the site. It is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The first theatre on the site, the Theatre Royal (1732), served primarily as a playhouse for the first hundred years of its history. In 1734, the first ballet was presented. A year later, the first season of operas, by George Frideric Handel, began. Many of his operas and oratorios were specifically written for Covent Garden and had their premieres there. The current building is the third theatre on the site, following disastrous fires in 1808 and 1856 to previous buildings. The façade, foyer, and auditorium date from 1858, but almost every other element of the present complex dates from an extensive reconstruction in the 1990s. The Audience (2013 Play)
''The Audience'' is a play by the British playwright and screenwriter Peter Morgan. The play centres on weekly meetings, called audiences, between Queen Elizabeth II, originally played by Helen Mirren, and her prime ministers. It premiered in the West End in 2013, at the Gielgud Theatre. A Broadway production opened in 2015, also starring Mirren. A West End revival played in London in 2015 starring Kristin Scott Thomas in the lead role. Overview ''The Audience'' is centred on the weekly audiences given by Queen Elizabeth II to prime ministers from her accession in 1952 to the present day. Three prime ministers are omitted from the play; Harold Macmillan, Sir Alec Douglas-Home and Edward Heath are not featured. ''Macbeth'' (, full title ''The Tragedie of Macbeth'') is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. It is thought to have been first performed in 1606. It dramatises the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power. Of all the plays that Shakespeare wrote during the reign of James I, ''Macbeth'' most clearly reflects his relationship with King James, patron of Shakespeare's acting company. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book, and is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy. A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. The Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival is an annual award presented by the Society of London Theatre in recognition of achievements in commercial London theatre. ''Soul Sister'' is a jukebox musical based on the life and times Tina Turner and Ike Turner, written by John Miller and Pete Brooks, with the original production directed by Bob Eaton. Productions ''Soul Sister'' opened at the Hackney Empire where it played a limited run from 14 April - 5 May 2012. The production transferred at the Savoy Theatre in the West End on 23 August 2012, following previews from 20 August. It played a limited run to 29 September 2012. Emi Wokoma starred as Tina Turner, for which she was nominated for the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The musical was nominated for 2013 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The production, again starring Wokoma, toured the UK in 2013. Critical reception Reviews for the show were mixed, although with praise for Wokoma. ''Top Hat the Musical'' is a 2011 stage musical based on the 1935 film of the same name, featuring music and lyrics by Irving Berlin with additional orchestration by Chris Walker. James Graham (playwright)
James Graham (born 8 July 1982) is a British playwright and screenwriter. His work has been staged throughout the UK and internationally, at theatres including the Bush, Soho Theatre, Clwyd Theatr Cymru and the National Theatre. Biography Graham grew up in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and was educated at Ashfield Comprehensive School and the University of Hull, where he studied drama. His first professional play ''Albert's Boy'' was produced by the Finborough Theatre in west London, where Graham became playwright-in-residence. His first major play '' This House'' was commissioned by the Royal National Theatre, where it was critically and commercially acclaimed, transferred to the larger Olivier Theatre, and was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Play. ''This House'' is a play by James Graham. It received its première in the Cottesloe Theatre at the Royal National Theatre from 18 September to 1 December 2012 in a production directed by Jeremy Herrin.
