2011 Torbay Council Election
Elections to Torbay Council took place on Thursday 5 May 2011. All 36 seats on the council were up for election. The previous election also produced a majority for the Conservative Party. It is governed by Torbay Council and consists of of land, including the resort towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, located on east-facing Tor Bay, part of Lyme Bay on the English Channel. A popular tourist destination, Torbay's sandy beaches, mild climate and recreational and leisure attractions have given rise to its nickname of the "English Riviera". History Human bones and tools found in Kents Cavern in Torquay show that people have inhabited the Torbay area since Paleolithic times. A maxilla fragment known as Kents Cavern 4 may be the oldest example of a modern human in Europe, dating back to 37,000–40,000 years ago. Churston Ferrers
Churston Ferrers is an area and former civil parish, in the borough of Torbay, Devon, England, situated between the south coast towns of Paignton and Brixham. Today it is administered by local government as the Churston-with-Galmpton ward of the Torbay unitary authority. It contains the coastal village of ''Churston'', the now larger village of Galmpton and the Broadsands area. The place-name 'Churston Ferrers' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as ''Cercetone'', meaning 'church town or settlement'. The manor was held by Hugh de Fereris in 1303, according to ''Feudal Aids'' records, giving the second part of the name. Churston residents tend to associate mostly with Brixham, though those in the northern part of the Churston-with-Galmpton ward often think of themselves as part of Paignton. Cockington
Cockington is a village near Torquay in the English county of Devon. It has old cottages within its boundaries, and is about a half a mile away from Torquay. Bus service 62 ( Torquay circular) calls at the village five times per day (Mon-Fri) and is operated by Torbay Buses. History The village was probably founded 2,500 years ago during the Iron Age with evidence of two hill forts on either side of Cockington valley. Little is known about Cockington from that point up until the remains of a small Saxon village were found near the Drum Inn. The evidence from this village shows that it was primarily a fishing and farming village. The first official documentation of the village was in the 10th century. The manor was owned by Alric the Saxon, before William Hostiarus, William de Falesia and Robert FitzMartin, who passed it down to his son Roger, who renounced his name to become Roger de Cockington. Goodrington
Goodrington is a coastal village in Devon, England. It is situated in Tor Bay and lies between Torquay and Brixham, less than south of Paignton. Its beach is known as Goodrington Sands. St Marychurch
St Marychurch in Torquay, Devon, England, is one of the oldest settlements in South Devon. Its name derives from the church of St Mary, which was founded in Anglo-Saxon times. The ward population taken at the 2011 census was 11,262. History and topography The parish of St Marychurch, which dates back to the Saxon period, was called ''Sce Maria circean'' when the Domesday Book was written and then became ''Seintmariachurche'' in 1242. Notable former residents include 19th century zoologist and creationist Philip Henry Gosse, who lived at Sandhurst on Torquay Road (now called St Marychurch Road). The former town stretches from Plainmoor to Maidencombe and is known for its scenery, shopping precinct and neighbouring churches. Steve Darling
Stephen Matthew Darling (born 1969) is a British Liberal Democrat politician who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Torbay since 2024. He has been a member of Torbay Council since 1995 and was the leader of the council from 2019 to 2023. Darling is registered blind and has a guide dog named Jennie. Political career Darling was first elected to Torbay Borough Council in 1995 for the ward of Shiphay. The council became a unitary authority as Torbay Council in 1998, and Darling was re-elected as a councillor for Shiphay in 1997 and 2000. He represented the ward of Watcombe from the reorganisation of ward boundaries in 2003, and has represented Barton with Watcombe since a further change in ward boundaries in 2019.
