2011 CONMEBOL Beach Soccer Championship
The 2011 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup CONMEBOL qualifier, also later and commonly known as the ''2011 South American Beach Soccer Championship'', was the fourth Beach Soccer World Cup qualification championship for South America, held from July 31– August 7 on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place from 7 – 14 May 2011. The qualifiers were not coordinated by CONMEBOL at the time. The event was organised by Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW), under the ''FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Qualifier'' title. CONMEBOL began recognising the tournaments in 2013, under the title ''South American Beach Soccer Championship'', also acknowledging the 2006–11 events as historic editions of the championship. The CONMEBOL qualifiers for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup (natively in Spanish: ''Eliminatorias CONMEBOL al Mundial de la FIFA de Fútbol Playa''), also previously known as the ''South American Beach Soccer Championship'' (Spanish: ''Sudamericano de Fútbol Playa''), was the main championship for beach soccer in South America, contested between the senior men's national teams of the members of CONMEBOL. The tournament acted as the qualification route for South American nations to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. The winners of the championship were also crowned continental champions. Copacabana () is a ''bairro'' (neighbourhood) located in the South Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL, , or CSF; es, Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol; pt, Confederação Sul-Americana de Futebol) is the continental governing body of football in South America (apart from Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana) and it is one of FIFA's six continental confederations. Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW) is the organisation responsible for the founding and growth of association football's derivative sport of beach soccer. The founding partners of BSWW codified the rules of beach soccer in 1992, with BSWW as it is known today having been officially founded in late 2000 as a singular institution to develop the sport and organise international beach soccer competitions across the globe, primarily between national teams. The 2011 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup was the sixth edition of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, governed by FIFA. Overall, this was the 16th edition of a world cup in beach soccer since the establishment of the ''Beach Soccer World Championships'' which ran from 1995–2004 but was not governed by FIFA. It took place at the Stadio del Mare (Stadium of the Sea), a temporary stadium at the Marina di Ravenna in Ravenna, Italy, the third tournament to take place outside Brazil, which started on September 1 and ended on September 11, 2011. However this was the first tournament to take place under the new two year basis; now the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup takes place once every two years. The tournament was confirmed in March 2010.
