2009–10 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The 2009–10 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the fourth edition of Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by Hekari United, who won their fourth consecutive title thanks to a 5–0 victory over Morobe FC in the Grand Final. Hekari striker Kema Jack won his third Golden Boot trophy, while Emmanuel Simon of Besta PNG United won the award for Player of the Season. Teams There were nine teams in the competition which was one more than the previous season. Welgris Highlanders, having finished 4th last season, failed to meet the deadline to submit their team, meaning for the first time, there would be no representative from the Highlands Region of the country. Sepik FC failed to submit a letter of interest. Nabasa also withdrew. Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The KPHL National Soccer League, also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top division of professional soccer in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league formed in 2006 by Papua New Guinea Football Association. It replaced the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship as the country's major soccer competition. In its 13 seasons, the competition has been won by only two clubs: Hekari United won the first eight editions, while Lae City have won the last six. The two clubs have met in two Grand Finals, in 2015–16 and 2019, with Lae City winning both. The Papua New Guinea national football team is the national team of Papua New Guinea and is controlled by the Papua New Guinea Football Association. Its nickname is the ''Kapuls'', which is Tok Pisin for Cuscus. Papua New Guinea's highest ever FIFA ranking was 153, in June 2017. As of June 2019, the country was ranked 171 out of 211 countries. This was a drop of 2 places from May 2019. Papua New Guinea had previously left the FIFA rankings, having not competed in a match between July 2007 and August 2011. University Inter, founded as ANZ University and formerly known also as ICF University, and, simply, University, is the oldest known semi-professional club association football club in Papua New Guinea, founded in 1969. It is the football club on the campus of the University of Papua New Guinea, based in Port Moresby. Morobe United FC, formerly known as Blue Kumuls (1970s–2005), Shorncliffe Blue Kumuls (2005), Tuguba Laitepo Blue Kumuls (2006), Morobe Kumuls FC (2007), Gigira Laitepo Morobe FC (2008–2014, exc. 2011–12 season), Gigira Laitepo Central Coast FC (2011–12), and Welgris Morobe United FC (2015–2018, again in use), are a Papua New Guinea professional football club founded in the 1970s and based in Lae. Hekari United, formerly known as POM Souths, Souths United, PRK Souths United and Hekari Souths United, is a professional football club formed in 2006, based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The club holds the record for most titles in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, having won eight consecutive titles from 2006 to 2014. They are also one of the two clubs from outside Australia and New Zealand to have won the OFC Champions League, and therefore to have represented Oceania at the FIFA Club World Cup, having achieved both in 2010. The OFC Champions League, also known as the O-League, is the premier men's club soccer competition in Oceania. It is organised by the OFC, Oceania's football governing body.
