2009–10 Great West Conference Men's Basketball Season
The 2009–10 Great West Conference men's basketball season marks the inaugural season of Great West Conference basketball. The Great West is the first new Division I basketball conference since the Mountain West Conference began play in 1999. In 2008–09, the Great West Conference began competition in basketball, although they were transitioning to Division I at the time. Preseason On October 29, 2009, the Great West Conference held its first basketball media day. The league's coaches voted South Dakota the inaugural preseason #1 and South Dakota senior forward Tyler Cain the preseason player of the year. NCAA
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It also organizes the athletic programs of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in college sports. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Until 1957, the NCAA was a single division for all schools. In United States colleges, top-tier basketball is governed by collegiate athletic bodies including National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Great West Conference
The Great West Conference (GWC) was an NCAA college athletic conference in the continental United States. Originally a football-only league, it became an all-sports entity during the 2008–09 season. The GWC stopped sponsoring football following the 2011 season. The conference became defunct when four of the remaining five full member schools became members of other conferences on July 1, 2013. History Cal Poly, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, and UC Davis inaugurated the Great West Football Conference during the 2004 season. Cal Poly and UC Davis had previously been members of the American West Conference, a similar low-level conference that existed in the 1990s. Mountain West Conference
The Mountain West Conference (MW) is one of the collegiate athletic conferences affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) (formerly I-A). The MW officially began operations on January 4, 1999. Geographically, the MW covers a broad expanse of the Western United States, with member schools located in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. South Dakota Coyotes
The South Dakota Coyotes, also known as the USD Coyotes (locally pronounced ; ), are the athletic teams for the University of South Dakota. Their team colors are vermilion and white. They have been members of Summit League of the NCAA's Division I since the 2011–12 school year. The football team plays in Division I's Football Championship Subdivision as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Coyotes were charter members of the Division II North Central Conference and were members until 2008 when it upgraded to Division I. Before the 2016–17 school year, most of the Coyotes' athletic events were held in the multi-purpose DakotaDome, located in Vermillion, South Dakota. Tyler Cain
Tyler Cain (born June 30, 1988) is an American basketball player for Derthona Basket of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). He played college basketball for the University of South Dakota (USD). He is best known for being the inaugural winner of the Great West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year award in 2009–10, the conference's first as a Division I basketball league. As a senior that season, Cain became the second player in USD history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He is also USD's all-time leading shot blocker after compiling 361 during his career. Isaiah Wilkerson
Isaiah Jamal Wilkerson (born November 13, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for Dorados de Chihuahua of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP). He finished his collegiate career in 2011–12 as the Great West Conference Player of the Year. He became the first player from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) to win the player of the year award and only the third overall winner in Great West history. College career Wilkerson did not enroll at NJIT immediately to play for the Highlanders. It was not until the second semester that he became a student, so his first career game on December 20, 2008 came without the benefit of having a single practice yet with the team.
