2009 Meteor Awards
The 2009 Meteor Music Awards ceremony took place on 17 March 2009 in the Royal Dublin Society, RDS, Dublin. It was the ninth edition of Republic of Ireland, Ireland's national music awards. The event was recorded and it aired on RTÉ Two on 18 March 2009. The awards show was hosted by television presenter Amanda Byram. The general public were eligible to vote in eight categories - Best Irish Band, Best Irish Male, Best Irish Female, Best Irish Pop Act, Best Irish Album, Best Irish Live Performance, Best National DJ and Best Regional DJ. AC/DC, Coldplay, Elbow (band), Elbow, The Killers and Kings of Leon were nominated for Best International Band, whilst Boyzone, The Blizzards, The Coronas, The Script (band), The Script and Westlife were the nominees for Best Irish Pop Act. Amanda Byram
Amanda Byram (born 16 June 1973) is an Irish television presenter and former model, best known for co-presenting BBC One game show ''Total Wipeout'' with Richard Hammond, the Irish version of ''Dancing with the Stars'' on RTÉ1 and for hosting American television shows, ''The Swan'' and ''Paradise Hotel''. Early life Formerly a model, Byram started her career on television in 1999 presenting the TV3 morning show ''Ireland AM'' with Mark Cagney, during which time she met her then-boyfriend, comedian Patrick Kielty. Television career Soon afterwards she began appearing on British television, initially as a host on ''The Big Breakfast'' on Channel 4 in 2001 and subsequently appeared as a guest host on ''Liquid News'' on BBC Three in 2002. The Script (band)
The Script are an Irish rock band formed in 2001 in Dublin, consisting of lead vocalist and keyboardist Danny O'Donoghue, lead guitarist Mark Sheehan, and drummer Glen Power. The band moved to London after signing to Sony Label Group imprint Phonogenic and released their eponymous debut album in August 2008, preceded by the debut single " We Cry" as well as other singles such as "The Man Who Can't Be Moved", "Breakeven" and " Before the Worst". The album peaked at number one in both Ireland and the UK. Camille O'Sullivan
Camille O'Sullivan is an Irish musician, vocalist, and actress. O'Sullivan is known for her unique, dramatic musical style and covers of artists such as Radiohead, Tom Waits, and David Bowie. Tara Blaise
Tara Blaise (born 1 March 1975) is an Irish female pop, folk, and rock singer. The eldest of six children, Blaise was born in London, but at the age of three moved with her family to Ireland and grew up in Aughrim County Wicklow. Biography Early career The daughter of an architect and a speech and drama teacher, Tara was introduced to the world of drama and music at a young age, studying speech and drama up to grade eight in the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Imelda May
Imelda Mary Higham (born Imelda Mary Clabby, 10 July 1974), professionally known as Imelda May, is an Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Known primarily as a singer, she also plays the bodhrán, guitar, bass guitar and tambourine. She is known for her musical style of rockabilly revival and has also been compared to female jazz musicians such as Billie Holiday. Gemma Hayes
Gemma Hayes (born 11 August 1977) is an Irish musician, singer-songwriter and composer. Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient with a wide range of instruments, including the piano and the harmonica. She is also a member of The Cake Sale and Printer Clips. Early life Hayes grew up in Ballyporeen, Tipperary with her parents and seven other siblings. She was surrounded by music from an early age heavily influenced by her siblings and her father who was a keyboardist in a local band. Lisa Hannigan
Lisa Margaret Hannigan (born 12 February 1981) is an Irish musician, singer, composer, and voice actress. She began her musical career as a member of Damien Rice's band. Enya Patricia Brennan (; ga, Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin; born 17 May 1961), known professionally by the mononym Enya, is an Irish singer, songwriter, and musician known for modern Celtic music. She is the best-selling Irish solo artist in history and the second-best-selling overall artist in Ireland after U2. Jape (band)
Jape are an Irish electronic–rock band from Dublin. Formed as a side project by Richie Egan whilst part of The Redneck Manifesto, they have released five albums to date; ''Cosmosphere'' (2003), '' The Monkeys in the Zoo Have More Fun Than Me'' (2004), ''Ritual'' (2008), ''Ocean of Frequency'' (2011), and '' This Chemical Sea'' (2015). David Holmes (musician)
David Holmes (born 25 February 1969) is a Northern Irish musician and composer. He worked as a DJ before releasing several solo albums that have incorporated elements of trip hop, big beat, electronic and rock. In the late 1990s, he also began composing film scores, establishing a long-standing collaboration with director Steven Soderbergh that includes ''Out of Sight'' (1998) and the ''Ocean's'' trilogy. Holmes is currently a member of the band Unloved, whose music has been used extensively in the television series ''Killing Eve'', for which Holmes is also a composer. He has remixed songs for numerous artists and produced albums for Primal Scream. Career Holmes began DJing in Belfast from the age of 15. Duke Special
Duke Special (born Peter Wilson; 4 January 1971) is a songwriter and performer based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. A piano-based songwriter with a romantic style and a warm, distinctly accented voice, he was previously known for his distinctive long dreadlocks, eyeliner and outfits he describes as "hobo chic". Nowadays, he performs mostly out of makeup and desires to be more like his true self. His live performances have a theatrical style inspired by Vaudeville and music hall, and often incorporate 78s played on an old-fashioned gramophone, or sound effects from a transistor radio. Damien Dempsey
Damien Dempsey (born 9 June 1975) is an Irish singer and songwriter who mixes traditional Irish folk contemporary lyrics that deliver social and political commentaries on Irish society. Damien sings in his native, working class accent in the English language, and to a lesser extent in the Irish language. Early life Dempsey was born and raised in Donaghmede, a Northside suburb of Dublin. His father was a panel beater while his mother had a variety of jobs in the area. His earliest musical influences came from the post-pub musical sessions that were held in his parents' house when he was a toddler.
