2009 European Cup Winter Throwing
The 2009 European Cup Winter Throwing was held on 14 and 15 March at the Estadio de Los Realejos in Tenerife, Spain. It was the ninth edition of the athletics competition for throwing events and was organised by the European Athletics Association and the Real Federación Española de Atletismo (Spanish athletics federation). The competition featured men's and women's contests in shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and hammer throw. In addition to the senior competitions, there were also under-23 events for younger athletes. A total of 226 athletes from 29 nations entered the competition. It was the first time that Spain hosted the competition. On the first day of competition, Anita Włodarczyk had a world-leading and personal best mark of 75.05 metres to win the women's hammer throw. Ásdís Hjálmsdóttir (born 28 October 1985) is an Icelandic former javelin thrower. Vera Begić (born 17 March 1982 in Rijeka, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia) is Croatian athlete specialized in discus throwing discipline. Since Vera's mother Jadranka Antunović also was a successful athlete and member of the national team in Yugoslavia (long jump, pentathlon), Vera has been connected to athletics from the early childhood. At the age of 12 she decided to take the discus throwing for her preferred athletic discipline, and soon achieved very good results in the junior level of competition. Vera Yuryevna Rebrik (russian: Вера Юрьевна Ребрик; uk, Віра Юріївна Ребрик; born 25 February 1989) is a Ukrainian track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. Her personal best throw is 67.30 metres, achieved at the Russian Championships in Adler. She also holds the world under-20 record of 63.01 metres. From Yalta, Crimea, she competed for Ukraine until 2014, after which she transferred her eligibility to Russia, following the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation.
