The 2009 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships were held in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia from 17–22 March 2009. They doubled as the national trials for the 2009 World Aquatics Championships. Australian Swimming Championships
The Australian Swimming Championships is the national Swimming championships for Australia. They are organised by Swimming Australia and separate championships are held annually in both long course (50m) and short course (25m) pools. The two meets are the country's top domestic meet for their respective course. The meet usually also double as a selection event for international competitions such as the: Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships. Some consider the meet the second-toughest domestic competition in the world, behind the USA's national championships. The first edition of the championships was held in Sydney in January 1896 with events at the Natatorium, Sutherland Dock (Cockatoo Island) and on the Hawkesbury River. Christian Sprenger
Christian David Sprenger (born 19 December 1985) is an Australian former breaststroke swimmer. He trains at the Commercial Swimming Club under Simon Cusack. Swimming career At the 2008 Australian Swimming Championships he qualified in the 100- and 200-metre breaststroke, placing second in both events to qualify for the Olympics in Beijing. He failed to make the finals in either event but picked up a silver after swimming in the heats of the medley relay. Later on in the year he won nine individual FINA World Cup races during the 2008 series. He also won seven silvers and three bronze. Sprenger had his first individual success at global level in 2009, breaking Kosuke Kitajima's world record in the semifinals of the 200m breaststroke, and took taking two bronze medals at the World Championships in Rome. Tommaso William D'Orsogna (born 29 December 1990) is an Australian freestyle swimmer. He won a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men's 4×100-metre medley relay. Cameron Colin Prosser (born 7 March 1985) is an Australian freestyle swimmer. Career Prosser was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and first competed for Australia at the 2006 Oceania Swimming Championships in Cairns where he won gold medals in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle events and with Kirk Palmer, Tim La Forest and Grant Brits won gold in the 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay, setting a new championship record in each event. Matthew Stephen Targett (born 24 December 1985) is an Australian sprint freestyle and butterfly swimmer and model. Career 2006 Commonwealth Games In 2006 and in his home town of Melbourne, Targett competed in the 50-metre butterfly, finishing second and placing above more experienced countrymen Michael Klim and Matt Welsh. Nicholas James D'Arcy (born 23 July 1987) is a retired national-record holding butterfly swimmer from Australia. He was removed from Australia's 2008 Olympic team due to a violent altercation that happened shortly after the Australian Olympic Trials. He was also removed from Australia's team to the 2009 World Championships after being convicted for the same incident. In March 2012 D'arcy was selected as a team member for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Jessicah Lee Schipper OAM (born 19 November 1986) is an Australian former competition swimmer. Specialising in the 100 and 200 metres butterfly, she won several gold medals at the Olympic Games and the World Championships between 2004 and 2009. Andrew George Lauterstein (born 22 May 1987) is an Australian swimmer and a three-time Olympic medalist. Personal Lauterstein grew up in Black Rock, Victoria and attended Brighton Grammar School. He has an elder brother and a younger sister. In his youth, Lauterstein was in the Victorian state football team and represented Australia at baseball in youth teams. He quit both sports at the age of 16 to concentrate on swimming.
