2008 Miami Hurricanes Baseball Team
The 2008 Miami Hurricanes baseball team represented the University of Miami in the 2008 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Hurricanes played their home games at Mark Light Field. The team was coached by Jim Morris in his fifteenth season at Miami. Playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division, they finished in first place in their division with a record of 23–5, 53–11 overall. The Hurricanes reached the College World Series, where they finished tied for fifth after dropping an opening round game against eventual runner-up Georgia, defeating Florida State, and being eliminated by semifinalist Stanford. Jim Morris (baseball Coach)
Jim Morris (born February 20, 1950) is the former head baseball coach at the University of Miami and Georgia Tech. His teams qualified for NCAA Regionals for 32 consecutive years, 23 at Miami and nine at Georgia Tech. Morris won national championships in 1999 and 2001, and earned National Coach of the Year honors in both seasons. Early career Morris began his coaching career as an assistant at Appalachian State in 1975. In 1976, he accepted the challenge of building, from scratch, a baseball program at Atlanta's DeKalb Community College. At DeKalb, Morris started with no players and no field, but he quickly made a name for himself. His Eagles were nationally ranked three times in four years and advanced to the 1977 Junior College World Series, where DeKalb placed second. Morris added two more winning years at DeKalb before moving on to become an assistant coach at Florida State. The Florida Marlins' 2008 season was the 16th season for the Major League Baseball franchise. Fredi González returned for his second season as manager. Despite having the lowest payroll in the Major Leagues, the Marlins finished with a record of 84–77, the 4th best record in franchise history, however, they failed to make the playoffs for the 5th consecutive season. The 2008 Clemson Tigers baseball team represented Clemson University in the 2008 NCAA Division I baseball season. The team played home games at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, SC. The team was coached by Jack Leggett in his fifteenth season at Clemson. The Tigers posted a record of 31–27–1, finished in 8th place in the ACC, and failed to advance to NCAA Tournament play, ending a streak of appearances dating back to 1987. The 2008 Florida Atlantic Owls baseball team will be the intercollegiate baseball team of Florida Atlantic University. It competes on the Division I level in the Sun Belt Conference. The 2008 team marked the second season of baseball to compete in the Sun Belt, after Florida Atlantic joined the conference after the 2006 season. On Thursday, April 24, 2008 Coach Kevin Cooney announced that the 2008 season would be his last season as head coach of the Owls. With his retirement announcement, Cooney will leave the Owls after 21 years as head coach. Doak Field (or The Doak) is a baseball venue in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. It opened in 1966 and is home to the North Carolina State University Wolfpack college baseball team of the NCAA's Division I Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
