Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. The distance is also included in the World Athletics Championships, which began in 1983. It is the only running road race included in both championship competitions (walking races on the roads are also contested in both). Madaí Pérez Carrillo (born 2 February 1980 in Tlaxcala) is a Mexican long-distance runner. She represented Mexico in the marathon at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics. Career Her first full marathon race was the 2003 Chicago Marathon, where she finished twelfth in 2:31:34. She finished fifth over 10,000 metres at the 2003 Pan American Games. She won the Bolder Boulder 10K race in 2004, and also won the Guadalajara Half Marathon that year, in the first of three consecutive wins. Camelia Alina Gherasim (née Tecuţă, born 10 November 1971 in Galaţi) is a Romanian long-distance runner. Gherasim competed in the marathon at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Hellen Jemaiyo Kimutai (born 28 December 1977) is a Kenyan marathon runner. She started out in cross country running and was fourth in the junior race at the 1993 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, taking the team gold medal with Kenya in a perfect score. Tracey Morris (born 9 September 1967) is a British long-distance runner. Early career Morris grew up in Anglesey, Wales and ran as a Welsh schoolgirl, but stopped running soon after. She moved to Leeds and in 1998, aged 30, she resumed running to keep fit , and took part in the London Marathon running for charity. In December 2003 she took part in a local event the 'Leeds Abbey Dash' and finished as the first woman just ahead of Bev Jenkins .
