The 2007 Women's NORCECA Volleyball Championship was the 20th edition of the Women's Continental Volleyball Tournament, played by eight countries from September 17 to September 22, 2007 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Cuba defeated the United States to conquer the gold medal and the Dominican Republic won the bronze medal over the hosts Canada. Cuban athlete Nancy Carrillo won the Most Valuable Player award. Women's NORCECA Volleyball Championship
The NORCECA Women's Volleyball Championship is the official competition for senior women's national volleyball teams of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, organized by the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA). Since its introduction in 1969 the tournaments have been awarded every two years. The competition has been dominated by Cuba and United States, which won together 21 of the 26 editions of the tournament. Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball. The complete set of rules is extensive, but play essentially proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court. Nancy Carillo de la Paz (born January 11, 1986 in Havana) is a volleyball player from Cuba. She represented her native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where she won the bronze medal with the national team in the women's team competition. Áurea Esther "Aury" Cruz Dalmau (born January 10, 1982) is an indoor and beach volleyball player from Puerto Rico who competed for the Puerto Rico national team at the 2008 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan, where she was named Best Server at the event. College career Cruz accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where she competed for coach Mary Wise's Florida Gators women's volleyball team from 2000 to 2003. The Gators competed in NCAA Division I and the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and were the regular season SEC champions for four straight years during Cruz's college career. Debora Seilhamer (born October 4, 1985) is a volleyball player from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Seilhamer made her debut with the Puerto Rico women's national volleyball team at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was named ''Best Digger'' at the 2007 NORCECA Championship, where her team ended up in fifth place. Stacey Gordon is an American puppeteer from Arizona who is best known for portraying Julia (Sesame Street), Julia, a four-year-old female Muppet with autism, on the children's television series ''Sesame Street''. Gordon previously worked as a therapist for children with autism. Her son has autism, and her experiences inform her portrayal of Julia (Sesame Street), Julia. Carmen Rosa Caso Sierra (born November 29, 1981 in Santo Domingo) is a retired volleyball player from the Dominican Republic, who won the bronze medal with the Dominican women's national team at the 2007 NORCECA Championship. She also became "Best Libero" of the event. Career At the volleyball tournament during the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, she won the "Best Libero" award and the gold medal. She became the "Best Defender" of the 2006 TV Azteca’s Women Stars Volleyball Cup, played in Monterrey, Mexico and won by the team with a perfect record in 5 matches.
