2007 Glasgow City Council Election
Elections to Glasgow City Council were held on 3 May 2007, the same day as the other 2007 Scottish local elections, Scottish local government elections and the Scottish Parliament 2007 Scottish Parliament election, general election. The election was the first one using 21 new ward (politics), wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward elected three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation. The new wards replaced 79 single-member wards which used the Plurality voting system, plurality (first past the post) system of election. It also saw the election of Glasgow's first councillors for the Scottish Greens and for Solidarity (Scotland), Solidarity. Glasgow City Council
Glasgow City Council is the local government authority for the City of Glasgow, Scotland. It was created in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, largely with the boundaries of the post-1975 City of Glasgow district of the Strathclyde region. History The early city, a sub-regional capital of the old Lanarkshire county, was run by the old "Glasgow Town Council" based at the Tollbooth, Glasgow Cross. In 1895, the Town Council became "The Corporation of the City of Glasgow" ("Glasgow Corporation" or "City Corporation"), around the same time as its headquarters moved to the newly built Glasgow City Chambers in George Square. Langside (ward)
Langside (Ward 7) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward increased in size and returned four members. Boundaries The ward is situated on the south side of Glasgow. As well as Langside itself, it also includes Battlefield, Mount Florida (including Hampden Park and the New Victoria Hospital), the northern parts of King's Park and Cathcart and the eastern part of Shawlands. The 2017 expansion took in Toryglen from the Southside Central ward and a few streets on the north side of the Cathcart Circle Line railway which had previously been in Newlands/Auldburn when the boundary was the White Cart Water. Pollokshields Ward
Pollokshields ( gd, Buthan Phollaig, Scots: ''Powkshiels'') is an area in the Southside of Glasgow, Scotland. Its modern boundaries are largely man-made, being formed by the M77 motorway to the west and northwest with the open land of Pollok Country Park and the Dumbreck neighbourhood beyond, by the Inverclyde Line railway and other branches which separate its territory from the largely industrial areas of Kinning Park, Kingston and Port Eglinton, and by the Glasgow South Western Line running from the east to south, bordering Govanhill, Strathbungo, Crossmyloof and Shawlands residential areas. There is also a suburban railway running through the area. Pollokshields is a conservation area which was developed in Victorian times according to a plan promoted by the original landowners, the Stirling-Maxwells of Pollok, whose association with the area goes as far back as 1270. Alistair Hulett (15 October 1951 – 28 January 2010) was a Scottish acoustic folk singer best known as the singer of the folk punk band, Roaring Jack. Early life Born in Glasgow, Hulett discovered traditional music as an early teen and began playing the folk circuit in New Zealand in 1968, after immigrating with his family. By 1971, he relocated to Australia continuing to perform at festivals. In the early 1980s Hulett founded the folk punk five piece, Roaring Jack, and opened for international acts such as Billy Bragg, The Pogues and The Men They Couldn't Hang. Govan Ward
Govan ( ; Cumbric?: ''Gwovan'?''; Scots: ''Gouan''; Scottish Gaelic: ''Baile a' Ghobhainn'') is a district, parish, and former burgh now part of south-west City of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated west of Glasgow city centre, on the south bank of the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Kelvin and the district of Partick. Historically it was part of the County of Lanark. In the early medieval period, the site of the present Govan Old churchyard was established as a Christian centre for the Brittonic Kingdom of Alt Clut (Dumbarton Rock) and its successor realm, the Kingdom of Strathclyde. This latter kingdom, established in the aftermath of the Viking siege and capture of Alt Clut by Vikings from Dublin in AD 870, created the sandstone sculptures known today as the Govan Stones. Govan (Ward 5) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Since its creation in 2007 it has returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. The ward's size became smaller for the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, but it continued to return four councillors. Boundaries Located south of the River Clyde, as well as central Govan (once a separate burgh which includes the neighbourhoods of Drumoyne, Ibrox, Linthouse and Plantation) the ward also includes the areas of Shieldhall, Cessnock, Kinning Park, Kingston and Tradeston. Cardonald (Ward 4) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. It was created in 2007 as Craigton and returned four council members using the single transferable vote system. The same name and boundaries were used in the 2012 elections. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the name was changed (Craigton is the name of a historic estate and was used as a ward name in past versions of the town authority, but in modern times the urban neighbourhood known by that name did not fall within its boundaries, whereas the whole of the larger Cardonald district did) although the territory and councillor numbers remained the same. Pollok Ward
Pollok ( gd, Pollag, lit=a pool, sco, Powk) is a large housing estate on the south-western side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The estate was built either side of World War II to house families from the overcrowded inner city. Housing 30,000 at its peak, its population has since declined due to the replacement of substandard housing with lower-density accommodation. The main features of the area are the nearby Pollok Country Park, where the Burrell Collection is now housed, the ruins of Crookston Castle (within the north part of residential Pollok) which Mary, Queen of Scots once visited, and the Silverburn Centre, one of Glasgow's major indoor retail complexes. Tommy Sheridan (born 7 March 1966) is a Scottish politician who served as convenor of Solidarity from 2019 to 2021. He previously served as convenor of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) from 1998 to 2004 and as co-convenor of Solidarity from 2006 to 2016.
