2006 World Darts Trophy
The 2006 Bavaria World Darts Trophy was the fifth edition of the World Darts Trophy, a professional darts tournament held at the De Vechtsebanen in Utrecht, the Netherlands, run by the British Darts Organisation and the World Darts Federation. Players from the Professional Darts Corporation competed for the first time, with five PDC players invited to the event. Gary Robson, the 2005 winner, and Jelle Klaasen, the BDO World Champion, were eliminated in the first round by Simon Whitlock and Tony Eccles, respectively. The final, featuring Phil Taylor, the PDC World Champion and in his first BDO major final for fourteen years, and Martin Adams, in his second straight World Darts Trophy final, was won by Taylor, 7–2 in sets. The women's event was replaced with a junior's event, with this being the only year a junior's event took place. Ron Meulenkamp won the junior's event. World Darts Trophy
The Bullit World Darts Trophy was a professional Darts (sport), darts tournament run by the British Darts Organisation and the World Darts Federation. Held each September from 2002 to 2007, it took place at the :nl:Vechtsebanen, De Vechtsebanen in Utrecht, Netherlands. The tournament had a playing format comparable with the two World Championships (BDO World Darts Championship, BDO and PDC World Darts Championship, PDC). Until 2007, it formed the third leg of the BDO Grand Slam, along with the BDO World Championship, the World Masters (darts), World Masters and the International Darts League. 2006 BDO World Darts Championship
The 2006 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship was held from 7 to 15 January 2006 at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Surrey. Defending champion Raymond van Barneveld was aiming to win a fifth BDO world title, equalling the record set by Eric Bristow. However, he was beaten 7–5 in the final by Dutch qualifier Jelle Klaasen; the final was the first and only World Darts Championship final to not feature a British player. Klaasen became the youngest World Champion at age 21 and became the first qualifier to win the World Championship since Keith Deller in 1983, who became the youngest World Champion himself, aged 23. This would eventually be Van Barneveld's last appearance at the Lakeside as he would switch to the rival Professional Darts Corporation the next month. Paul Hanvidge
Paul Albert Hanvidge (born 15 June 1961) is a former Scottish professional darts player. His best achievement is reaching the quarter-finals of the Lakeside World Championship twice. Career Hanvidge was the 2005 German Open Champion and made his World Championship debut in 2004, losing a first round match to Jarkko Komula. He missed out on qualification for the event in 2005, but returned in 2006 and beat Co Stompé and Simon Whitlock before losing 3–5 to Shaun Greatbatch in the last eight. He made the quarterfinals again in 2007, beating Martin Phillips and Albertino Essers before losing to 50-year-old qualifier, Phill Nixon, in the quarterfinals. He wore a black armband in memory of his mother, who had died on Christmas Day. In 2008, he suffered a first-round exit, losing to Brian Woods, whose average of 96.51 was the highest of the first round. Vincent Van Der Voort
Vincent van der Voort (born 18 December 1975) is a Dutch professional darts player on the PDC circuit. As of the 2012 PDC World Darts Championship, his nickname is the "Dutch Destroyer", although he used to go by "Grease Lightning". He is best known for his quick throwing style, which is how he got his temporary nickname "The Fastest Player in the World". He reached the final of the 2007 UK Open, which helped him become a well known face in the world of darts. Playing style Van der Voort is well known for his spasmodic style and machine-gun speed of play which has gained him a reputation in both the BDO and the PDC for being one of the more erratic throwers in the darting world. Shaun Greatbatch
Shaun Greatbatch (13 July 1969 – 5 June 2022) was an English professional darts player. He lived in Suffolk and worked in the construction industry. His nickname was Nine Dart Man, having been the first player to hit a perfect nine dart finish on live television, in the final of the 2002 Dutch Open against Steve Coote. Darts career Shaun's family is said by commentators to have a rich darting pedigree. His Welsh mother, Sandra, reached the semi-finals of the Women's World Championship in 2002 and was a Women's World Masters finalist in 1992 and 1997. Shaun lost in the first round of the BDO World Darts Championship in his first four occasions, 2001 against then reigning champion Ted Hankey, in 2003 against Colin Monk, 2004 against James Wade and 2005 against Mike Veitch. John Walton (darts Player)
John Michael Walton (born 10 November 1961) is an English professional darts player currently playing in World Darts Federation (WDF) events. He is best known for winning the 2001 BDO World Darts Championship. He adopted the nickname John Boy and used the song "Cotton Eye Joe" by Rednex as his walk-on theme. BDO career 1993–2000: Early career Walton picked up some small tournament victories in the early stages of his career, including the Websters 150 Championship in 1993 and the Highlands Open Championship in 1996 but didn't manage to qualify for the World Championship until 1999 when he lost 0–3 to Roland Scholten on his first round debut. Niels De Ruiter
Niels de Ruiter (born January 21, 1983 in Lelystad, Flevoland) is a former Dutch darts player and former chairman of the Dutch Darts Federation. Career On the darts circuit his nickname is The Excellent Dude, which is a reference from the film ''Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure''. He is also known for using Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' as his walk-on music, which he plays air guitar as he enters the stage. Michael Van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen (; born 25 April 1989) is a Dutch professional darts player. He is currently ranked number 3 in the world, having been number 1 from 2014 to 2021. He is also a three-time PDC World Champion, having won the title in 2014, 2017 and 2019. Van Gerwen is regarded as one of the best players of all time. Mervyn King (darts Player)
Mervyn King (born 15 March 1966) is an English professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) tournaments. Nicknamed The King, he has reached seven PDC major TV finals and reached a peak of No. 4 in the PDC Order of Merit. Early life King first took up the game at the age of 12, playing with an old rolled-cardboard dartboard given to him by his father. Martin Adams
Martin Adams (born 4 June 1956) is an English professional darts player who plays in World Darts Federation (WDF) events. Nicknamed "Wolfie", he is a three-time BDO World Champion and three-time World Masters champion. He represents Cambridgeshire at county darts level and was the captain of England from 1993 to 2013, the longest any player has held that role. From his debut in 1994, Adams made a record 25 consecutive World Championship appearances, before failing to qualify for the first time in 2019. Adams was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April 2016, but by the end of the year he was given the all-clear.
