2006 Chinese Professional Baseball League Playoffs
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) playoffs included the three top teams from the regular season and crowned a champion with the Taiwan Series through the month of October, 2006. The winner represented Taiwan in the Konami Cup in Japan with the champions from Japan, South Korea, and an all-star team from China to determine an Asian champion in November. Participants *La New Bears (#1 seed): The Bears won the number one seed by being the regular season champion for both halves of the season, thus securing the best overall record as well. This is the first time ever in the playoff for the Bears and, as the top seed, secure automatic entry into the Taiwan Series. *Uni-President Lions (#2 Seed): The Lions are returning to the playoffs after missing out last year. Chinese Professional Baseball League
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL; ) is the top-tier professional baseball league in Taiwan. The league was established in 1989 and played the first season in 1990. CPBL eventually absorbed the competing Taiwan Major League in 2003. As of the 2023 season, the CPBL consists of six organizations, all of which have teams in the main league and farm league. The CPBL consists of Major () and, since 2006, Minor () leagues, with the Minor league team rosters consist of developmental and injury-recovering players. Chang Tai-shan
Chang Tai-shan (; Amis name Ati Masaw; born 31 October 1976 in Taitung, Taiwan), is a Taiwanese former professional baseball player. Career He originally drafted by the Wei Chuan Dragons in 1996, he has played for the Sinon Bulls and Uni-President Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League. A well-known slugger, Chang has been a frequent member of the Chinese Taipei national baseball team since 1998 and holds the record of hitting the most home runs in CPBL history with 289. He also holds the career record for hits with 2,134. He was missing from the Olympic Games as because he tested positive for a banned substance. Chang denies taking any banned drugs and thinks it may be because of medication he took. As a result of the test he may be banned for 3 years. 2006 Konami Cup Asia Series
Official logo The second annual Konami Cup Asia Series was held in November 2006 with four teams participating. The champions from the domestic leagues in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan along with an all-star team from China took part in the competition. All games were held in the Tokyo Dome in Japan. The tournament was sponsored by the Nippon Professional Baseball Association and Konami. The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters defeated the La New Bears in the title game to win the championship for Japan. Starting pitcher Yu Darvish was named the MVP of the series. Hansel Izquierdo (born January 2, 1977) is a retired Major League Baseball pitcher. He played during one season at the major league level for the Florida Marlins. He was drafted by the Marlins in the 7th round of the amateur draft.
