2006 AFL Finals Series
The Australian Football League's 2006 finals series took place between the teams that finished in the top eight in the 2006 AFL season. It began on the weekend of 8 September 2006 and ended with the 110th AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 30 September 2006. The winner, West Coast Eagles, was crowned champion of the AFL after defeating Sydney by one point. Eight teams qualified for the finals by finishing in the top eight of the premiership ladder. With the top eight race effectively ending several rounds before the end of the season, the push for the final two positions in the top four heated up as all six teams below West Coast and Adelaide were vying for the crucial "double chance" with only a few rounds left. With wins in the final round, Fremantle and Sydney secured the "double chance" making it the first time in the game's history where the top four positions did not consist of a single Victorian team. West Coast Eagles
The West Coast Eagles are a professional Australian rules football club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club was founded in 1986 as one of two expansion teams in the Australian Football League (AFL), then known as the Victorian Football League. The club plays its home games at Perth Stadium and has its headquarters at Lathlain Park. The West Australian Football Commission wholly owns the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Football Club, the AFL's other Western Australian team. The West Coast Eagles are one of the most successful clubs in the AFL era (1990 onwards). McIntyre Final Eight System
The McIntyre Final Eight System was devised by Ken McIntyre in addition to the McIntyre Four, Five and Six systems. It is a playoff system of the top 8 finishers in a competition to determine which two teams will play in the grand final. The teams play each other over three weeks, with two teams eliminated each week. Teams who finish in a higher position in the competition are given an easier route to the grand final. In top level sport, the system was used by the Australian Football League from 1994 until 1999, and by the National Rugby League from 1999 to 2011. Shane McInerney (born 19 October 1970) is a former Australian rules football field umpire in the Australian Football League. Martin Ellis (born 9 May 1969) is a former Australian rules football Umpire (AFL), field umpire in the Australian Football League. Ray Chamberlain (umpire)
Ray Chamberlain (born 5 September 1976), better known as Razor Ray, is an Australian rules football field umpire in the Australian Football League. Chamberlain was born and grew up in the Australian Capital Territory and umpired his first Australian rules game as a teenager.
