2006 Scheldeprijs
The 2006 Scheldeprijs was the 94th edition of the Scheldeprijs road cycling one day race, held on 12 April 2006 as part of the 2005–06 UCI Europe Tour, as a 1.HC categorised race. Belgian rider Tom Boonen, in the rainbow jersey as the incumbent world champion, won the race in a bunch sprint for the team, ahead of teammate Steven de Jongh, while compatriot Gert Steegmans () completed the podium. Boonen was the first incumbent world champion to win the race since Eddy Merckx in 1972. Teams Twenty-one teams were invited to take part in the race. Scheldeprijs
The Scheldeprijs is a cycling race in Flanders and the Netherlands which starts in Terneuzen, crosses the Scheldt River, and finishes in Schoten. Until 2018 it was held entirely in Belgium. The event, ranked as a 1.HC race on the UCI Europe Tour, features mostly sprinters on its roll of honour, as it is held on all-flat roads over roughly 200 kilometres. First held in 1907, it is the oldest still-existing cycling event in Flanders, notably six years older than the Tour of Flanders '' monument race''. The race had its only interruptions during both World Wars and celebrated its 100th edition in 2012. German sprinter Marcel Kittel holds the record with five wins. Since 2021, a women's edition of Scheldeprijs is held on the same day as the men's race, starting and finishing in Schoten, approximately 136 kilometres in distance. Tom Boonen (; born 15 October 1980) is a Belgian former road bicycle racer, who competed as a professional between 2002 and 2017 for the and teams and a professional racing driver who currently competes in Belcar, having previously competed in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. Niko Eeckhout (born 16 December 1970) is a Belgian former professional road racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 1992 and 2013. He was the 2005–2006 UCI Europe Tour series and the 2006 Belgian National Cycling Championship Road Race champion, and currently works for the Team as a coach. Career Born in Izegem, Eeckhout started his career in 1993 riding for the small Collstrop-team. Hendricus "Henk" Vogels (born 31 July 1973, in Perth) is an Australian former professional road bicycle racer who retired from competition at the end of the 2008 season, riding with the Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team. He won the Australian national road race title in 1999. He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. He was subsequently directeur sportif of the Fly V-Successful Living team. Vogels also provides expert opinion for SBS Cycling Central. Jukka Vastaranta
Jukka Vastaranta (born 29 March 1984) is a Finnish professional cyclist from Tampere. From 2003 to 2006 he rode for the Dutch team but in 2007 he switched to the Belgian continental team . In 2008 he rode for the mountain bike team Brink-Ten Tusscher, but after a good start had to retire again due to prolonged health problems. After settling back to Finland, in late 2008 he finally found some help for the health problems he had suffered from past several seasons.
